View Full Version : REALLY Slow downloads from US

Really annoying now, I have a dedicated server from the US. Basically i'm getting about 40kb/s max of it. As far as I know with some tracroutes the only thing I can put it down to is the routing. I'm on the stapleford UBR (cpc1-stap5-0-0...) and I've asked a few other friends who live near me to try and download a file also, They have the same speed as me, but other people on NTL who I know who arnt on the stap UBR have better downloads, I try a traceroute and it's totaly different to the stapleford one (well obv) the stapleford one goes via level3.net and some others mostly go via spiritlink.

I've sent a E-mail to the guys I had the server from, but I'm assuming it's more a NTL problem? Maybe i'm wrong but i'm still waiting for the tech to get back with me...

Just wondering if any of the more advanced techies on here could advise?

Thanks,
George.

I have the same issue but not as severe. I can get about 80-100KB/s from my server and its on a 10Mbps uplink (Im on 4Mbps NTL). I was told its caused by sheer distance and up to now I've put up with it. Its 3x faster with FTP though and not HTTP.

Sheer distance, thats bs :p

I know your with Layeredtech as i've seen your posts, I had a dedi from them about 3 months ago, got 700kb/s if i was lucky, 500kb/s stable. Didn't bother paying for the server again (Was a poop spec basically) Got a new server from them again just last week, and by ganny 50kb/s... isn't good at all... It's the routing whats the issue and most people know that but blahh what can I say?

Proxies?

Already tried them, don't help at all.

I still reckon its bad routing through savvis's own network since I can download from USA servers at full whack when going through level3 and other backbones.

Exactly the same through 4mbps TW here, super-slow to the US, can't even stream a 128kbit connection form pandora anymore... I hought it was MY wireless network, now i may start to wonder...

Swoopie, put up a test file.

NTL have rubbish peering to the USA with almost everyone but Level 3 & Cogent (and it took months of complaining by lots of people to get Cogent sorted out), but it also seems to depend upon your location and proxies etc.

Gamespot here over Savvis gives less than 60k, but if I use a Watford proxy it goes up to 700k, so it seems to depend on some magical combination of your location and proxy.

We've been told before by NTL staff here that peering is known to be a problem but nothing is ever done about it.

If you put up a test file we can at least see if anyone can get full speed from your server.

Just been looking at some traceroutes from Server -> Home computers, I did a test to 3 ips (3 are from nottingham, 2 are on stapleford UBR, 1 is on the basf one... after the 4th hop mine goes to
5 * * ae-32-56.ebr2.Dallas1.Level3.net (4.68.122.190) 11.682 ms

my other 2 friends goes to

5 * ae-31-53.ebr1.Dallas1.Level3.net (4.68.122.94) 6.786 ms *

and then obv different routes... (same routes for my 2 other friends untill it reaches NTL)

my 2 mates (1 is on 1Mb and got 120kB/s | the other is on 10Mb and got 500kB/s) i live about 5 minutes away if even that and it's just totaly different routing, which leads be to believe it's an LT problem? - I could be wrong, I don't know.

I get about 530-550k here from Seven Kings ubr

A trace TO your server is currently revealing up to 70% packet loss in Level 3's network, could just be discarding pings, the speeds I got were quite good really for one stream to the USA.

260KB/s - 280KB/s here. Not too bad but still not maxing out.

My connection has been pretty poor for the last couple of days. I get really slow download speeds from a number of sites. I don't believe this to be a problem with my wireless network as I can get good speeds when downloading from some sites and the speed seems to be ok on newsgroups.

I am on 4Mb and live in the G20 postcode of Glasgow.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

My mate round the corner, i just asked him to download, he's on 4mb and got 400kb/s+... so now im wondering what could it be? my modem? (It is a NTL:Home 100)

Newshosting has been slow at night here too. Rather annoying.

Can't hit 1mbps atm dunno why, it's strange why others around me can get over 100kB/s and I can only get 30kB/s... Been like it for over a week now I don't know if it's just my modem or something else, Might phone NTL 2morrow if the problem persists, (If I get the chance to)... We'll just have to see, this is just beyond a joke. :(

Downstream Receive Power Level : -1.10 dBmv
Downstream SNR : 30.61 dB
Upstream Transmit Power Level : 52.50 dBmv

bleh bleh bleh I don't know what to do :(

I was just about to post, are the micrsoft download servers running slow?
I'm only getting 91KB/s!

It's me, my modem, getting 30kb/s all over the place. (I just assumed it was the US as I was only attempting to download from the one location) as I've not had a reason to download anything else... It's peaking between 30kb/s jumps to like 200kb/s if im lucky (for a sec) then down to 30 then down to 7 and blah stops at 7 then 30 then huuu lol, bah bah ntl modem bahh

1st 512K took 8125 ms = 63 KB/sec, approx 519 Kbps, 0.51 Mbps
2nd 512K took 3203 ms = 159.9 KB/sec, approx 1318 Kbps, 1.29 Mbps
3rd 512K took 3094 ms = 165.5 KB/sec, approx 1364 Kbps, 1.33 Mbps
4th 512K took 4797 ms = 106.7 KB/sec, approx 879 Kbps, 0.86 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1020 Kbps, 1 Mbps

Well, mine scores at around 3 to 3.5mbps, and i get 490kbps form the netherlands server i was using to download things form earlier. So, it's most likely the peering, just your modem playing up at this oppurtune moment.

18:35:44 (289.65 KB/s) - `surf_greatcanal_v2.bsp.bz2' saved [7382466/7382466]
Went from around 250-350 KB/s but that was the average by the end.

I'm using hers-cache-2.server.ntli.net (automatic, I didn't choose it)

I get around 470KB/s from London-based servers.
