View Full Version : Had enough, I'm going back to BT

Now that my 12 month contract is finally over, I've decided to go back to ADSL with BT, as the 600k "service" I received from ntl has been awful. This week has been especially bad, with slow surfing and very high pings. This is a tracert I took just now, at an off-peak time:

Target Name: www.ntlworld.com

As you can see, that is very bad, and it's been close to this all week. I've been having this problem on and off for at least the last 6 months. 2 Engineers have come round so far, and the last time I got the guy to put me on a new UBR, and it was fine for a couple of weeks. But again it has deteriorated. I'm in the Greater London area, (ex-C&W) and I have the STB 4000 modem.

I've lost count of the number of times I've spoken to tech support, or the number of hours I've wasted listening to their hold music, and they usually conclude that it's a problem with my computer setup. I had to email the director for my area to get a proper engineer to come round. I'm a CS player, and I've had to forfeit several matches due to my connection.

So, I have given my one months notice. Now I'm just praying that my connection will be usable for this last month, but from what I've experienced this week, this looks unlikely. I'll give tech support another call tonight, but I'm not going to get my hopes up.

Goodbye ntl. It's been a blast.

If you complain and tell them that the service isn't of "merchantable quality" and you don;t believe your getting what your paying for they will have to let you out of the contract early ;)

I,ve just started online gaming after a 3 month lay-off [thanks to high pings] and its still as crap as it was 3 months ago. Just wish peeps would stop asking who my isp is, and are all UK isps that bad. Need to have a serious think, as it means converting my ntl phone back to BT for adsl [again].
My 12 months was up last month, so at least that helps, just wish they could sort it out for everyone. ;(

Thanks Neil, some useful info there. I think I may go with pipex too.

Also, I'm slightly confused about this one months notice thing. When I asked BT to reconnect me, they said that once my 12 months were up, they only required 7 days notice to disconnect me, and ntl would to stop charging me. While ntl said that I had to pay for 1 month after I asked to be disconnected.

If you tell NTL 1 month before you want to leave them then they can't charge you for another month.

If you are porting your number to BT, ntl will stop charging you for the telephone line once it's been ported out (approx7-10 days) provided you have other services, however remember to give notice for any other services like broadband as you'll be charged for this for 30 days after notice is given.
Hope this helps.

The only way to sort these problems out is vote with your feet, & ditch ntl.

I can assure you there is a whole new world out there offering levels of customer service that ntl can only ever dream of.

That's all you need to sort you out MastaUK.

I left NTL for much the same reasons, ping probs constant outages etc. I cancelled my contract after 7 months with no probs, I gave my reasons for cancellation as a failure to deliver the service I was paying for and as a result had every right to cancell. I am now with Pipex and am very happy with the service.

Thanks deedee, that cleared things up for me.

th'engineer: I'm sure if I did set aside an hour to call up tech support, and they sent out an engineer, it would be fixed for a short while. And then in two weeks time it would deteriorate again, just like it has whenever an engineer has visited in the past. It's just not acceptable to have a problem that keeps coming up again and again, and noone having a permanent fix for it. I think the bottom line is, the network is overloaded, and ntl haven't put enough money into maintaining/replacing the infrastructure in ex-C&W areas.

I have indeed voted with my feet, and I see a lot of users on this board have done the same. Hopefully ntl will notice that their poor level of service has alienated their customers.

You've mentioned it three times in this thread already Neil! :) I will be changing over the same as you did.

BT are reconnecting me on Thursday, and I'll probably be going with the pipex Solo 500 service, with free activation, as I already have my modem and splitter from when I was previously with BTopenworld.
