You can't treat them like houseplants. They are trees. You don't need to keep 'em indoors in fact they do better outside than in..

What I can't get the hang of is the pruning bit...and the shaping bit...and the wiring bit...and the repotting bit(which may require root pruning).

After I read up about them I decided not to bother.I'd rather have a cactus. :)

They die really easily. Generally a bad idea.

I have a rubber plant, which is currently heading for the ceiling (bit of a worry), a jade plant (big bushy thing) that is pretty robust, and my latest plant is a huge triffid thing. Begins with a C. I've forgotten now. Likes to be sprayed with cold boiled water. It also moves, which is a bit creepy :disturbd: Leaves arrange themselves.

People over water them because they think of them as house plants. They are not, they are trees and trees just need to be out in the fresh air being rained on,snowed on and getting lots of fresh air.The only trees that would be an exception in this climate are those from the rain forest and desert areas. They would have to be kept in glass houses as witnessed in Kew and even then you need to be careful about the watering.

What you need to do is find a local Bonsai group or specialist and get some advice from them.

I'm opening a book though.Any advance on 3 months? ;)

Looks healthy, congratulations.

I managed to develop a Cotoneaster from a small seedling. Nurtured it for about 8 years, got really gnarled and twisted. Unfortunately I was in hospital for a few weeks and my family never thought to move it to its summer shelf, or check that it had water.
Too much sun and no water killed it off.

Might try again now I've seen yours:D

8 years and they killed it? I'd be a bit sad if that happened!

Go for it! They are cool to look at - I like the odd-shaped one's myself!

They are trees, not plants, Jules!

I had one of those kits - but it croaked it!
