hi,currently on the 4 mb service, download speeds are good,
average 477 kb/s, bandwidth=3.79 last time tested,but browsing
is still a bit slow/lagging before the page starts to load, now my
average latency is quite high....about 225,would this be causing
the slow/lagging browsing that i am experiencing? and what can
i do about it! any help/tips gratefully appreciated chaps;)

225 ms, (almost 1/4 of a second delay) I dont think thats a problem really. How are you measuring this, and to what sites? That kind of latency to non uk/euro sites is pretty good.

You could try clearing your internet cache in IE, if its full then this does cause alot of delays.
More info here.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie6/using/howto/customizing/clearcache.mspx

I dont want to sound like NTL tech support, so I wont mention the rebooting modem, or virus/malware scanning options. (oops I did , sorry )

If its just started happening id bet that clearing the IE cache as stated earlier would help.

However, the beta of IE 7 if u have it, has some anti phishing code that slows down webpage loads alot. You can turn this off if you use the beta.(not reccomended tho)

Any new antivirus / firewall program recently installed can have the same effect too. As can leaving file sharing programs on in the background.

225ms is a HUGE delay when playing online games. Even 100ms is considered too high in most games.

I've also been suffering with higher latency since being upgraded to 4mb from 2mb. And i'm pretty sure it's to with the "Downstream Receive Power Level" to my property. Which as always been -11.5. The funny thing is when i called BB support line they said it was fine from their end. Obviously their testing equipment is'nt up to the job.

Anyway this make's perfect sense that i only start to see these problem's since the 4mb upgrade. As it point's to the fact that on the 2mb at these power level's the BB could handle it fine. But on the 4mb it's causing slow internet, high latency and even my STB as started playing up. This is all looking like the level's are taking a beating now as i am demanding more from the network.

And the tech support treated me like one of their usual "don't know anything" customer's. Soon changed his tune once i told him i worked for Telewest as a BB service technician for 3 years. Plus i told him i was going to cancel all three service's if i don't get some action in the form of a engineer paying me a call. :)

Got an engineer coming tomorrow. So i'll let you know if i get it sorted ;)

I agree there, but he says its a webbrowsing issue, I didnt see any reference to gaming, For the record, how are your gaming pings bommer?

For Http Browsing issues try changing your Proxy.

Well had the engineer round today. And what a surprise my "Downstream Receive Power Level" was to low. As if i already did'nt know  Now it's at a nice steady -2.4 for the first time of having BB from NTL i can surf the internet with great speed and latency in online games is spot on again ;)

how do you find out you're downstream power level reading?
glad you sorted the problem out.

taylorig

You go to your browser and type 192.168.100.1 username and password are both root. Have a look through all your signal level's and compare to one of the stickys about signal level's on these boards. This one http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/showthread.php?t=26006 ;)

And thanks :)

downstream receive power level is 3.0 dBmv....good or bad?

taylorig

A downstream receive power level of 3.0 dBmv should be fine. What's your SNR (Signal to noise ratio) like?

bommer

snr 35.8? phoned the tech dept today (in India)
reckons my modem is fine, admited the ping times were high,
i asked if an engineer would be sent out,no was the anwser.
he seemed to think the problem lies with my computer,
said i needed to reinstall windows XP(dont have the cd
so this is going to be a bit tricky me thinks) and he said
this would cure the problem, thanked me for my call and hanged up.

First off. I would have made sure I got that guy's name from TS :erm:

And I got an engineer out after ringing at about 4pm one day and he was here for 12pm the next day. I told TS that at my end the levels were low. Which they were at the time. Even though he kept insisting that the levels were fine at their end on the system. Basically I wouldnââ‚Ã⠀šÃ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t take no for an answer. And the guy at TS said if the engineer doesnââ‚ƚ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢t find anything they will charge me. Good job I could prove it when he got here.:)

Also if youââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢ve done full virus, spyware etc scans of your system then I donââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t really see the point reinstalling windows. But you never know.

Ive just been trying to get my speed issues with NTL corrected, for example.

Wed, 16 Aug 2006 23:11:17 UTC

1st 512K took 672 ms = 761.9 KB/sec, approx 6278 Kbps, 6.13 Mbps
2nd 512K took 625 ms = 819.2 KB/sec, approx 6750 Kbps, 6.59 Mbps
3rd 512K took 609 ms = 840.7 KB/sec, approx 6927 Kbps, 6.76 Mbps
4th 512K took 625 ms = 819.2 KB/sec, approx 6750 Kbps, 6.59 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 6676 Kbps, 6.52 Mbps

Its supposed to be a 10Meg connection and its been very slow now for a month! I keep getting the run around from TS (in india) and ive tried evrything to get back to 10meg (even re-installed windows!) but with no luck!

downgraded to the 1meg service today, might as well be £7
a month better of and still get the same browsing speeds....

Me too. Crap browsing service on 4 meg, so why pay the extra £7 each month.
