Kev aint on MSN so i'll ask here ...

Friend of mine recently got upgraded to 10mb but is only getting around 3-5mb on average ... done a million speed tests on a million tests ... currently using ethernet connection into his onoard nic ... however when i take my laptop around, stick the connection into my nic port, i can get around 9.2mb on tests and download from giganews around 1.17mb/sec

he's tried a new NIC to rule out the mobo nic being faulty, still same, tried USB but gets even worse speeds, and the pc is clean of all viruses and spyware and has even rebuilt windows twice to rule out being something on the pc

i checked the downstram at 192.168.100.1 and that read the the correct 10mb settings

usually i can fix most things, but this has got me stumped

any ideas anyone?

cheers:erm:

Does he have a firewall running? If so try disabling it or in Zone Alarms case you have to uninstall it.

no firewall
Try a different NIC, you can grab one for about £3.50 nowadays... Could be a fault somewhere within the drivers for the one he's using ;)

have you checked that the nics tried are set to 100meg full duplex or auto detect? Try fiddling around with the duplex settings.

Also, what kind of spec is your friends pc? and which os?

Try rebooting into safe mode with networking to rule out any dodgy processes running on the pc that are interfering with things.

He may have had dialup in the past and "tweaked" the MTU speed to suit.

Give this a whirl: http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/280

what utp cat cable does he have? ensure its the 100mb stuff and not the 10mb stuff, cat 5e will do.

i had a similar problem with my mates machine and apart from changing the cable, i setup his firewall to not nag and scan new networks from ntls domain.

some new firewall and av solutions are getting a little to heavy handed. also is he on a router? maybe you setup your router config fine.

Is his hard drive old? On its way out?

Firewall Running?

Proccessor Slow?

Not Much Ram?

You may have different RWIN values set up in windows on the pc & the laptop.
To check if the pc is set up properly, go here:-
http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks
and see what it recommends.
If you need to adjust the RWIN, you can download DRTCP to change it.

btw...I can only get tweaktester II to work if I shut down zone alarm.
