According to my zonealarm logs the ip address 10.255.76.1:67 keeps trying to connect with svchost.exe which I understand to be the generic host process of XP.

I have this set to allow access but block server in zonealarm.

According to smartwhois that ipaddress is connected to -

Internet Assigned Numbers Authority
4676 Admiralty Way, Suite 330
Marina del Rey, CA
US

Reading their website the address is a "Private Use" IP address and the connection is coming from my "local environment" which to me means the NTL network.

Can anybody give me some more information on this.

Port 67 (UDP) is DCHP, you should probably allow it. :)

That's quite a useful protocol :)

Thanks for the info.

Thing is I've always blocked server on the "Generic Host Process" and I've never had any connection issues.

Blocking port 67 as server would only cause a problem if your PC was a DHCP server, which it should not be. Your PC should be a DHCP client, though - making requests to NTL's DHCP servers to obtain/renew an IP address (lease).

The Zone Alarm forums have useful information on configuration.

Why use zone alarm when NTL offer a perfectly good Firewall free of charge?

Because anyone with any sanity wont let any NTL branded software near their machine :p:

Zonealarm is free anyway and I trust that more than I trust anything that NTL would offer for free :D
