There have been some posts here of people reporting to have been upgraded in some places around the country.

Our ntl grapevine tells us that all current 1M customers are to get a free upgrade to 2M by the end of October this year. This will bring ntl's speeds in line with the current Telewest speeds.

Any customer who gets their broadband service through their Set Top Box (STB) will be able to swap to a stand alone modem for free.

The upload speed will increase from 100K to 200K.

Samsung can handle 5-6mbit so i guess not, but if one was offered for free i'd take it.

I was on the phone to them yesterday to reapply my "special" prices and was told the upgrade to 2M will be at the end of this month.

Aww! just when I was going to get serious about leaving (and I could go to talktalk, though I'd need to replace my router).

Now if that combines with a decent triple-play offer with family pack (not interested in pay monthly mobile, unless it's zero rental - call charge only - like Virgin did at one time), then I'll be a really happy customer.

The recent ads "Cable, if you can, you should", keep making me think - yeah, and what the hell advantage is there? - Fewer channels than Sky, broadband speed/price comparisons only just holding up as some "large capped" come within range of their "uncapped" (Talktalk again).

Virgin still offer the zero line rental contract along with others.

I was given a month's free trial on 2mb a couple of weeks ago, when my STB was changed. Didn't realise there was going to be a general upgrade anyway

Haven't been able to make use of it. My BB was knocked by last week's storms and have only just got back online today

Having never had an automatic speed upgrade before I was wondering how this will work when it happens.

Do I have to reboot my modem to get the new speed or will it be pushed out to me automatically?

Basically when the time comes and you haven't had the speed upgrade then you reboot the modem. :)

For goodness sakes, who cares!

Worry about it when it happens, as far as I know NTL ain't even confirmed it yet so why waste your time and mine as well as every one elses talking about it?

It's the same about the 50mb - 100mb thread, are your lives that empty that you have nothing better to talk about????

With regards to the question above you know as well as I do you have to reboot your modem when changing speeds, a simple search would have answered your question!

It is confimed if you goto this page:

http://www.telewest.co.uk/html/whytelewest/thefacts.html

which was linked from the whycable.co.uk website they keep advertising on TV. It has a comparsion between sky and ntl:telewest next to broadband speed it says up to 2mb with a small 3 next to it at the bottom the 3 refers to

3. 1Mb in ntl regions, being upgraded to 2Mb in Q3 2006

Well, it seems that page has a pretty firm indication, so what happens to PACE STB users?

Do we get a shiny new Samsung, a SACM added to the clutter, or some discount for being stuck on 1Mb when those with better kit get 2Mb.

There's no definate answer to that.Often a reboot isn't needed but then again often a reboot is needed. You should reboot the modem it only takes a few seconds then run the speed test again.

I am in Norwich by the way, and don't have a clue what mbps is (actually I guess its mega bits/bytes per second)
It seems kinda slow and clunky lately, is it just my iMac or Norwich generally?

yes, that sounds like '2 meg' ;)

it is megabits per second - megabytes would be 8x faster, while kilobytes are megabits divided by 8,000, no wonder we get confused ...

Well I'm in the 'Luton' area and I just ran the speedtest and it showed the usual 1 meg service. So I rebooted and now I'm on 2 meg :)

So the answer is - yes - you might need to reboot. Having said that, I've seen posts where people got speed upgrades without rebooting...

First I knew about this 2mb upgrade was when google returned this forum.
I was trying to find details on the upload speed for my 1mb ntl package.

Having got home I've signed up to this excellent forum and gave the simple speed test a try.
I'm in Welwyn Garden (Luton exchange I believe) and getting 1.8Mbps

Anyone know a simple upstream speed test please ?

I downloaded Dan Elwell's software, but sadly you have to register to test the upstream. :(

I've had exactly the same pattern as yesterday, ie "upgraded" to 2Mb for a period, then, apparently back down to 1Mb (c750Kb download speed).

Has anyone a way of checking on nominal speed? I suppose it's possible I just have high contention, so I'm getting bad degradation of a 2Mb service.

Yes, just pull the power plug out of the back of the modem, or switch the mains power off.

Don't forget to let it stay powered off from 10s or so.

Called NTL to see when my area will be upgraded (E London). NTL said this happened 2 weeks ago! I re-checked my modem speed, still 1meg, NTL Tech support confirmed this. Rebooted the modem a couple of times - still no joy. Tech support removed my modem from their system and readded it - still no joy. Finally they agreed to book an engineer to come out tomorrow to fit a booster to my line free of charge.

I'll let you know how I get on.

....The NTL engineer has just left, and still I only have a 1mb link. Here's what happened.....

The Eng. fitted a 'FLD5W Digital Signal Conditioning Filter' to one end of my co-axial cable(adjoining the cable modem), and installed a '4db Forward Path Equalizer' to the other end(inline with wall mounted box).

Then disconnected the cable modem from the power (for approx 2 mins), a then reconnected. Once the 'ready' light remained static I rechecked the speed on http://192.168.100.1. Unfortunately still only 1mb.

The Eng. then took my number and disappeared to make some calls. Called me back 10 minutes later to inform me that the main junction box serving cable to my street has low signal/power levels, and that someone will be out to fix this on Saturday. He went on to say that if this didn't fix the problem, I would be given a replacement modem.

Ever the optimist, finger crossed this will be sorted at the weekend!:tired:

Just rang NTL... got told there was a high demand and have to wait till the 3rd October for a CM... but, you shouldn't have to ring them for it, it's kinda stupid, they should have some kinda telephone call out or something, so i suggest if your in the SE you should ring em for a switch.. According to 'Richard' STB's can't handle 2 meg... 1.5 MB is max.. but will see when they come out i guess..

Hello, 1st post on here and all that...

Have just spoken to NTL CS, They confirmed my area (Wirral) has been upgraded and I am indeed on 2mb now, I requested a CM as I have one of the old CW Pace STB, I asked to keep the box as I have been told by engineers that they are better than the Samsung STB. The CS assistant could not confirm if the PACE STB could handle 2Mb or not, but was happy to sort me a CM for free..... not bad at all really:)

I phoned a couple of weeks ago and asked how I would get the upgrade as I have a Pace STB.

The CS Rep confirmed that I couldn't get 2mb through my STB and said 'I'll pass you to sales who can arrange to have a SACM installed'.

Whilst I was on the phone to sales the Sales Rep said 'I notice you've not got any of our offers at present'. She then offered me an £8.50 reduction on my existing TV and Telephone Bill plus an upgrade to 4mb BB.

The SACM install happened last Saturday so I've now got 4 times faster BB and it's costing me £1.50 a month less.:)

Unfortunately my TV's been out of action for a week but that's another story.:(

That's an old SACM, the latest ones are the NTL:250 which are dark blue in colour.

It's unlikely you will get it replaced for free unless it's faulty, but there's no harm in trying. :)

Hutchy, That modem you have will work fine for the 2Mb speeds.
It's if you wish to go any higher, eg. 4 -10Mb that you will need a newer modem.

1st Post here.

Been onto NTL CS to ask about the move to 2MB. I told them that I had a Pace STB and I'll need a CM fitting as the Pace will only do up to 1Mb. He said I didn't and he had done the upgrade there and then - told me to reboot when I got home.

I pointed out that only the Samsungs were OK for 1Mb > but he stated that 'their system' would have told him if I needed a box swap. I disagreed but we'll see when I get back tonight!

Thanks Jules -

Got home and rebooted. Nothing. Had to ring up to get my PID and password again. After a lot of messing about with my router for some reason - all done and on 2mb!

NTL have done well today - never had a problem myself. Five rings to get through this morning and the same tonight.

I'll have to bite the bullet and get a CM put in I think, especially if the faster speeds are coming as per the rumours.

i posted a picture above of my ntl100 cable modem. i am typing from my brother in laws computer as my internet fails to work for the past 2 days now.

can my modem only handle 1mb speeds then? i have tried everything to get it working but still i have no connection even though the ip is fine everything is fine but the lights on the modem are not working properly. the d/s light flashes constantly while the power and ethernet lights remain on.

so is my modem faulty? do i need the new 250 one?(which my brother in law has and he has no problems with his internet and upgraded speed) i may not get your replies for a few days due to no internet so if anyone has any answers for me then please email my mobile phone email address alexhutchison@3mail.com

i'd be very very grateful and thank you very much in advance for any help.

4th 512K took 2719 ms = 188.3 KB/sec, approx 1552 Kbps, 1.52 Mbps

Hi everybody. Been lurking in the dark for a while, and decided to join - only because I have an interest in this thread...:)
I live in Gosport, have a Samsung STB, and have been waiting for the nice ntl folk to give me an upgrade, checking via speedtest.net. Each and every one returns a speed around 964 kb/s upload.
No problem I thought, not got to me yet I thought, still October. Recently while at a friends (SACM) I showed him speedtest, hey presto 1800 kb/s.
I have rebooted the box, tried different days/times, dropped the firewall, bypassed the router, used a laptop - all the same speed. I know the problem does not lie with me - laptop gets 1800 kb/s at other address. Have also tried more connections in Gosport, all on SACM, all higher speeds than mine.
Does anyone know how/who to contact to get this checked without going through the call centre and having to do all the things I have already done whilst paying for the privilige?

On another tack I have been given a 200 SACM (think it was skip fruit), would connecting this work, help, or just land me in the deep brown stuff?
Thanks to all.

Calls to faults and customer services are free from NTL lines.. Just call 150.

Nope. It has a unique serial number (or MAC address) that is registered to the address it was installed at. It probably wouldn't work, and could land you in trouble anyway.

Hi, having read about the 1meg upgrade on this forum i decided to give ntl a call as i have a pace stb. Here is how it went, last thursday i used 150 to get through to broadband faults. A very helpful guy went through the options available and adviced me to go for a sacm. He could not arrange this so passed me on to another group (faults if i remember) and once again a very helpful lady explained that although i had been passed to the correct group she also could not arrange the upgrade as i lived in the wrong part of the country (stoke-on-trent). I would need to speak to sales so she transferred me and after having to re-enter number, etc, i spoke to a guy who arranged for an engineer to visit today after 12.00. On wednesday a letter from ntl arrived detailing a new name and pin. Today spot on 12.00 the van pulled up and a young engineer proceeded to install a 250 modem. This took 30 minutes after which he went through how to install the cd which he left. I installed the cd software and now have a speed upgrade as shown below. Hope it takes a while for ntl to set the service to correct speed. Not bad service. Below are before and after upgrade.

Well, that wasn't as easy it could have been. Called on 150, spoke to Tech Support who told me that it wasn't possible for me to have the 1mb to 2 mb upgrade, and I had to speak Customer Services.
Spoke to them and they were 3/4 of the way to arranging a cable modem installation when I asked why: "Your pace stb can't do that speed, you need a modem". When I told her ntl gave me a Samsung some months ago, all changed and reset signals were sent.
These had no effect and so back to Tech Support I went. This time I did the cmd checks, and the numion test, 960ish, rebooted in safe mode 1000ish, "when can an engineer call?"
He came, he asked why I called, did a facial wtf, checked my levels and told me to call Tech Support as he couldn't do any more, and I needed to be put on the 2mb service.
Back to Tech Support, he checked and told me my account was on an old old account code from before the old account code, and therefore had not had the 2mb upgrade applied, and I needed to talk to Customer Service.
Transferred to Customer Services, told the helpful Scottish lady what the helpful Indian technician had told me (they were helpful), and she understood and promised to sort it out as soon as poss.
Hopefully this will sort things out and I will be a happier camper - I was not unhappy before, but wondered if there was I reason why I had been left out.
I'm happy with how things are going, and satisfied with how my query was dealt with. Good one ntl.

If you have a pace STB you can only get 1mb, it will need to be changed to a samsung box.
Just had mine changed and still getting 1mb. Phoned CS and i was still on the pace 1mb billing, they've changed that and sometime this afternoon the internet will go down and i'll have to re-enter my pid and password and reboot everything.

He told me 2mb is available everywhere now, so if your not getting it upgrade your pace box and phone cs to make sure it's upgraded there end.

Don't know if it's the same everywhere but I'm on a Samsung STB in an upgraded area and rebooting did nothing.

I had to phone customer services and they had to send a signal to change me from 1-2Mb.

Ten minutes after they sent the signal I turned the pc back on and got the log on screen that you get when you first sign up. Input my details and did a speed check which confirmed 2Mb.

Hope that helps.
