View Full Version : Newsgroups slow!

Currently on Thundernews, noticed some slowdown yesterday, was only doing about 70-100k on a 10MB connection. I emailed them and they said there was no problem on their end, they did say they had got a lot of emails from ntl customers today about the same problem.

This is part of what they told me:

"The data indicates that your speeds are suffering at the point the NTL's network connects to the major backbones. On the route for each port, you can see where there is a large jump in the latency (almost 200 ms) at the point NTL connects to the backbones (for example, hop 9 on port 119). Speeds leaving our server farm are going out in under 10 ms which is very good.

We have had a number of NTL customers write us today about speeds, but no others for other ISP's, so we feel fairly confident things are normal on our end. Hopefully, NTL will straighten out the problem on their network soon."

Just wondering if anybody else is suffering?

Newshosting is ok on port 119 and the recommended port 9000 for NTL.

tried all the different ports, 23, 25, 119, 3128, 7000, 8000 & 9000, makes no difference, I did want to use newshosting rather than thundernews but only have a debit card so couldn't sign up with them.:(

Same problem here too, using easynews for 3 months now with no problems, then 12kb/s download speeds for the past 3 days. tried different routes ect and searched net but still no joy.
was gonna try a different usenet server but thundernews seems to have a DOS attack goin on and giganews speed check produces the same results as easynews.
BTW high to everyone, my first post after finding this site while trying to sort this problem out. :-)

I signed up to Newshosting with a debit card. It is still a Visa. If you only have a Maestro, then that may cause a problem, but a Visa Debit will work just like a credit card.

therein lies the problem, anyway my speeds seem to have returned to normal today so will hold off signing up for anything else for now.

I'm having the same problem.

In Leeds, using Giganews, 10mb have tried all ports listed above and am not getting speeds any quicker than 30KBps.

Normal browsing speeds not affected.

Hope this gets sorted out soon.

Just to confirm, last night I switched servers from europe to international (Giganews) and speeds were as normal again.

Still didn't receive an email informing about the disruption, but glad I'm back to full speed again.

Iv'e just signed up to newsdemon and am at the moment getting steady 497KB/s downloads....yet only around 34KB/s on easynews.
traceroute tests on BOTH servers show no problems.
Do easynews throttle downloads after reaching a limit?
After months of excellent service from easy, it'd be a shame to dump em.

not if it's a VISA electron debit card.........still bloddy VISA but more of a pain to use, not all NG's accept these or PP.

so for now signed up with newsdeamon lastnight as they accept both and the speeds pretty good avg out about 700kb/s, although got best part of 1300kb/s just after midnight lastnight. saying that tried giganews's test and it showed 9000kb/s connection.:bigcry:

Easynews is still full 10mb here with several streams, I've always found that their Level3 Routing is the best.

Years ago I had a Visa Electron and it used to be a temporary card until you had stayed with the bank a certain length of time and then you would get a normal Visa debit card. If you have been with them for more than three months, maybe you should consider speaking to the bank manager and telling him that you want to have a Visa debit card or you'll be moving your account.

I use astraweb, dont get the full 4mb. ntl's newsservers are just totally crap at the moment, I'm lucky if I get 34k a second.

hiits been a while since i last used ntlworld newsgroups , i cant seem to access my claranet account anymore, so have tried the ntl servers, i dont see any dvd binaries anymore, but i can still see divx , is there any reason for this? also i it safe to use the ntl servers? or are all newsgroup server as safe as each other?, TIA

DVD groups were removed from NTL servers a couple of years ago because they're the largest ones and NTL didn't have the capacity to support them. To be fair NTL's newsgroups are still far better than all the other big ISPs I know of. These days I tend to use my unlimited account with Newshosting for everything and NTL is there for me if Newshosting have a problem. Oh, and their newsgroups are as safe as everybody else's. Certainly far safer than P2P rubbish.

NTL's aren't bad for the groups that they carry, but BT is the current best ISP - why ? - because they use Giganews :)

I start my computer up, I run a speed check and my 4mb onnection reports back around 3.8 so not bad.

I load up my newsreader and check again and its still 3.8. I start to download leave it a couple of mins and the speeds never go over 280k. So I shut the newsreader down, leave it 10 mins and run another speed check and it return 1.8mb

Same happens using any p2p application also and the only way to resolve it is it reboot the modem and router and even then it only lasts till i try and download something

Try removing the router and try a direct connection to the modem.

If you feel you need a new router i recommend a Linksys WRT54GS, which is very popular on this forum.
