Hi,

I've recently upgraded to the 10Mb package, but my download speeds are exactly the same. Spoent an hour with "technical support", most of on hold, who said they've reset the server, but still no change in speeds.

"Technical support" were useless to say the least. The gentleman on the other end gave me the impression that it was my fault that the speeds were so poor! Figure that out!

Is advertising for a 10Mb service, but only providing 4Mb accurate? I have spoken to NTL on numerous times, and they keep saying that it should be at least at 8Mb.

Can anyone help????
Thanks

I have always found the 10MB service crap!

I have had 1MB - Received Full Speed!

I have had 2MB - Reveived Full Speed!

I have had 4MB - Received Full Speed!

I have had 10MB - Normally get 6MB but goes all over the place, anywhere between 3 - 7MB plus downloads are slower than ***** when using p2p only on the 10MB teir!

Work that out!

On another note though have you checked your modems config file to make sure you have infact been upgraded?

Also try unpluging your modem from the mains for 30 seconds then turning it back on...

As acwb says, turn off pc unplug your modem, leave it for 30 secs, turn on modem, let all lights settle, turn on pc and see if there's a change, check modem config to see if it has updated to the 10 meg tier. And as always, its upto 10 meg, doesn't mean you will get it unfortunately :(

Good luck, let us know how you get on :tu:

Thanks for your tips

I've unplugging, switching off the computer for weeks now, but still no change in the speed.

Looking on my account it says its running at 10Mb. How do I check if my modem is set for the 10Mb speed please?

I know it says up to 10Mb, but if its only 4Mb, then that would be false. I've recieved another letter from NTL offering me Cable, TV and bradband. On it it says, "surf the net using our superfast 1Mb, 2Mb or 10Mb speeds and you'll never look back."

Then is in small print, "speed of internet connection assumes components working at optimumspeeds and capacity"

Before I joined they promised at least 8Mb speed, and technical support are their usual hopeless self!

To check your modem config file enter http://192.168.100.1 and click login, enter root for both username and password fields.

Then click on the operation configuration link and check the maximum downstream data rate level!

Post back what it says!

I've just did what you suggested & it said:
Downstream Lock : Locked
Downstream Channel Id : 0
Downstream Frequency : 586750000 Hz
Downstream Modulation : QAM64
Downstream Symbol Rate : 6952 Ksym/sec
Downstream Interleave Depth : taps12Increment17
Downstream Receive Power Level : -4.5 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 32.8 dB
But if i download from a server (ie. Apple.com) i am able to download file at more than 10 meg

I know this is going to be of no help to you but I download from Newsgroups at 1.18MB/s so it can do what it says on the tin.

10meg is not a pipe dream it can be acheived, well in Hertfordshire anyway :D

Then it looks like a case of download site peers being the problem, if as you say, you get full speed from a 'reputable site'
