I have to put up with looking at it and hearing people shout about stuff they have read in the apaper without any real understanding about the actual story. E.G. Asylum seekers

What's really scary is the influence a paper like the Sun wields over voting patterns in elections. There are a lot of people who believe something just because it's 'in the papers', and a lot of them read the soaraway Sun. :disturbd:

Speaking as a northern lad, it gives me a warm glow inside to know that the Sun is the biggest selling paper in the South, although the Mirror, which usually outsells the Sun up here is not much better, don't read either.:(

i think it's odd that the papers can be biased during an election yet the radio and tv channels arn't allowed to say anything likewise.

I used to read The Sun all the time......after a while i couldnt be bothered with who was sleeping with who in the celebrity world....who cares about all that rubish when there is real problems going on in the world!!!

What i find scary is the fact that people form views on what they read in these tabloids and then take them as facts....

No paper is better than any other paper, be it broadsheet or tabloid press.

The news in our country is increadibly heavily veted by our government, like most, if not all, countries.

The Sun is considered the 'working class' paper, along with The Mirror (who decided to drop the red and go black to try to hide it's roots), then we step in to the realms of papers like The Daily Mail which are 'middle class' papers and end up with papers like The Guardian and The Times for the upper classes.
Trouble is, they all talk crap.

My partner gets The Sun & I get The Guardian. Read both papers and you can see blatant inconsitencies in various news reports. Get hold of a few more papers and you find ever more inconsitencies.

It's easy to point the finger at the 'working class' Sun.

NOTE: I have tried to make this post with an un-biast view. My point is meerly that all the papers are crap.

i tend to agree with that. people do seem to pick on the sun more because it is a redsheet, a la daily star and sport, which are complete bum-wipes... unless you like that sort of thing of course ;)

They key thing to remember about ALL newspapers is that they are all only giving an "Interpretation" of the news from their own specific perspective.

We as readers need to learn to re-interpret what they say knowing where the "news" has come from and thereby form our own independent and informed judgements and opinions on the key matters of the day rather than simply accepting what any particular paper thinks we should think.

If the Sun, and others like the Mirror et al, have one fault it is that they try to do this latter job for thier readers and influence how news should be interpreted. Yes the broadsheets do the same but they are far more subtle in the way they do this.

Sociable, I agree with that synopsis. Perhaps The Sun, The Mirror and the News of the World (What a joke!) are probably designed to entertain, since tittle tattle and images of girls in various states of undress, in the News of the World's case under 18, are far more important than anything else.

Generally newspaper proprietors have their own axe to grind and of course editors must also join in you pays your money and takes your choice but in the end those with thinking minds can form their own opinions.

Steve W: The news in our country is increadibly heavily veted by our government, like most, if not all, countries.

What is veted? Can't find it the various dictionaries here am I missing something here? Is it a free CD?

No the public channels cannot be biased. The commercial channels must give equal weighting to party political broadcasts.

and in general to this thread

I read the Sun in the morning, the FT for lunch the Evening Standard in the evening and also look at Telegraph on Line and BBC on Line.

The Sun has views I agree with and also disagree with. The Littlejohn for PM campaign would be a fine idea IMHO. His rants against '5 a day coordinators' and other great jobs this government seems to create is great.

It is highly likely the sun throwing its and with it Mondeo mans weight behind new labour helped them to victory however they probably would have managed without it, and they do seem to have turned against Labour.

Intersting extension of this was the TV news coverage up to and during the war in Iraq.

I ended up watching many of the CCTV reports (Chinese cable news channel) to get an unbiased analysis of what was going on.

As for Govt "vetting" of the news this is I suspect not that big an issue. One only has to look at the on-going arguements between them and the B.B.C. to reaslise they have little power to stop stories being published or broadcast.

What is perhaps more worrying is the continued use of "offical" leaks which are designed to mislead and confuse whilst giving them the possibility to later deny the report.

If nothing else the best hope for the future is that the general public has at long last learned to detect and mistrust "spin". Small wonder most of us have become so sceptical about anything we read or hear when it has come from an "Official" source be that Corporate or Govt.

The Sun ran a story after the Hillsborough Stadium disaster alleging that Liverpool football fans stole things from the bodies of those who had been killed. Sales of the Sun plummetted in Liverpool as a result and have never really recovered.

Let me get this stright we dont now what is going on in the big wide world yet the sun does, the sun which thinks the Johhny wilkinson is more important that things in the middle east?

The Sun, which gives the facts in the way readers want them, without taking a objective view? and being bias in favour of what will sell more papers?

How on earth can anyone claim that the sun lets you know what happens in the big wide world?

Sports reporting is better in the telegraph or parhaps the times. But the suns is full of rumors instead of geniune reports. FOR GODS SAKE THEY SPENT WEEKS TALKING ABOUT BECKHAMS FOOT. IF YOU HONSTLY THINK THAT THE SUN IS OBJECTIVE AND TELL YOU THE TRUTH WHILE LETTING YOU KNOW WHAT GOES ON IN THE WORLD. THEN YOU HAVE A PROBLEM

I don't remember the details now, but I think they offered a grovelling apology, which suggests that they didn't really have any evidence. I think they may have claimed to have spoken to people who claimed to have seen it happening.
