Speed check outside of Newsgroup d/l shows 8500Kb/s which is what I'd expect, but Giganews is only getting 30KB/s ish - been up and down, nothing over 200KB/s - any ideas on this one folks??

....btw, I'm in Warrington WA4

Hi mate, have you tried Giganews' own tools to see what they say?

Their speedtest and reverse traceroute tools?

im in warrington and getting the same thru giganews and also slow speeds thru ntl's news server. i'm on 10 meg.

i think the ports throttled as torrents are still ok, just news affected.

Just spent half-an hour on the phone to NTL tech support - upshot there is no problem their end, so they say.

I even signed up with a new news provider - so different set of servers - still got the same problem. Hence the chance of two news providers going down are basically nil. adsl guide speed report looks ok and d/l outside of news (don't use torrents) seems fine. So yes, it's looks like it's news that's affected although NTL stated there wasn't a known problem here!

So, where do we go from here?

it did this last week, then righted itself

do you know your amount downloaded from giganews this month?

....lots - but not as much as most of my previous months. NTL have told me there isn't a problem with my Newsgroup access - presume if the fair use policy was being implemented they'd be able to tell me?

I can expect the odd problem, but we're at 36 hours now and it's never, ever been this slow.

To be honest if Giganews say there defo isn't a problem their end and NTL say the same, I've really nowhere to go with this - how long do I wait just to see if it rights itself? I can't justify paying for a service that doesn't work properly.

..btw are you still having probs Topaz?

topaz

yes still having probs, i switched to torrents till it fixes itsself. i had engineer out last week, he muttered that i should switch from 10 to 4 as 4 will be going to 10 at some point.

its deffo not giganews as i use a ntl newsserver as well which gets faster speeds than giganews but doesnt have everything i want.

i'll call my mate tonight in warrington as he uses giganews too (not as much as me!) to see if his has been affected.

i think its port throttling due to overuse.

...and who within NTL can let me know if this is the case because at the moment I've been told there shouldn't be any problems?

Ahh im with you now, that is just the performance and tracert via HTTP.

I was under the impression that when you connect using your Newsreader that changing the proxy affected your speed.

Took 3.6secs here and measured my speed to the server at just over 4000kbps, nice! :D
