View Full Version : Modem MACID without physical contact with the modem?

hi,

In regards to my post http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/showthread.php?t=50041 and the lack of replies, I've decided I am going to have to contact 'NTL Tech Support' tomorrow. As things definately aren't getting any better:
http://www.theupload.com/thumbnail/00045101_ntl****up03.jpg (http://www.theupload.com/view.php?id=00045101)

But owing to being slightly dissabled, I cannot physically get hold of the NTL 250 modem where its located.

So is there anyway I can aquire the MACID without physically touching the modem as I foresee this being a problem for NTL Technical Support otherwise.

Thank you.

It shouldn't be too much of a problem, as ntl will have the mac address of your modem on their system anyway.

If you don't have a proxy server specificed then you can open your browser of choice and go to http://192.168.100.1/

The page that comes up "cable modem information" has the mac address as the second item :)

Thanks for that, it was just what I needed.

Unfortunately, nothing has changed. I still have virtually no speed, I can surf the internet, listen to online radio etc. But cannot download at anything past 977Kb\s

I don't suppose you or anyone knows what this means do you:

The one thing that is really annoying now is how all these people that ring tech support seem to get fobbed off with the same old "it must be your computer, clogged up with adware and viruses".

Is this a standard response from Tech Support?
Are they told to just say this automatically, thankfully my connection is fine, but i will certainly loose my rag if i get spoonfed this rubbish when I call Tech Support one day (hopefully wont have to :D)

It seems the way the indian tech support seem to operate in my experience. They then move onto what's next, but don't seem to be able to grasp that the problem maybe something to do with the modem or NTL. Obviously I appreciate that they have to eliminate user intervention, but to do the same things over and over and over again, just isn't on.

Anyway, here's the update, I spent lastnight on the phone to NTL tech in india, got nowhere as usual. They determined it was my router to blame, despite my assuring them I had had a friend remove the cable then follow the instructions given to me by the other NTL Tech Support person ie: remove power from cable modem and power from router, plug cable modem back into computer, wait 5 minutes (we waited 10 minutes) plug cable modem back in, wait for lights to show, turn on computer - do speed test. Nothing had changed, remove cable from computer, plug back into router etc etc. What they didn't tell me earlier yesterday, is that I was to do all this whilst on the phone to 'tech support'! So a wasted effort then.

Called earlier this evening, managed to get through to UK NTL Tech Support, totally different. I explained what had happened thus far, explained I was dissabled had to wait for an able bodied friend to disconnect the router\modem etc. The person I spoke too advised my friend of various things to do, then made an appointment for an engineer to visit... not quite what I was hoping for, especially considering I have put up with this situation for 5 weeks, which will be 6 weeks by the time the engineer gets to see me sometime next week. But much better than facing another useless and tiresome call to NTL india.

So fingers crossed it will get sorted next week. If it doesn't, then it's time to start looking for other providers. As I can't be bothered anymore, they've warn me out!

Thanks for posting your modem log, it almost looks the same as mine, whether that's a good thing or a bad thing remains to be seen  :)

If it's worth anything to anyone, here is the information gleamed from my NTL 250 cable modem:

Cable Modem Status:

Anyone have any idea what's happening, or am I resigned to waiting another week before someone from NTL can be bothered to solve the problem?
