View Full Version : Looking for a new digital camera

Since the girlfriend got a nice digital camera it has made me think about updating my old Goodmans 2megapixel one.

I am thinking about the £70 marker but I could go as high as £150 should the spec make it worth while, I would like something which can video for a few minutes, and takes excellent quality images, I am not a brand name snob but would like something compact and reliable, I have a 64mb SD card in my current camera so memory is not a major factor.

Any help would be nice.

Thanks

Andrew

If your after one with a zoom, get one that has optical zoom as well as digital zoom. The optical zoom is far superior.

I tend not to use Zoom as most of my pictures is things in front of me, the pets etc, but thanks for the advice :) I was wondering which zoom beat the other :)

i'd hope all your pictures are of things in front of you ;) Seriously though, zoom is an additional tool for creativity, i know i'd never buy a camera without a zoom lense.

Also good for taking pics of Mazda's zoom zoom :D

Here is a good place to find out whats hot and what's not. Check the user comments.

http://www.dpreview.com/

After you find a camera that you like, try visiting

http://www.fotosense.co.uk/

I got a camera from them a while back, they had the best deals, and were very helpful in a non ripoff kind of way.

I noticed there is no mention of SD card capability in the link you showed me? I have a 64mb SD card in my Goodmans G-Shot 2mp camera right now so it would be useless?

Sorry, newer Fujis use XD cards, but they're relatively cheap now.

Even Jessops will sell you a 128Mb one for ~£20 but you can get them a lot cheaper.

Memory is pretty much ten to a penny these days.

If you're going to be getting a 5mp camera, then why not simply get a bigger card. mymemory (http://www.mymemory.co.uk/ ) is a good place to get cheap memory, and at £17.99 there's no excuse not to fill your boots. I got a nice 512Mb memory stick for my camera from there for only £23some thing including s&h.

Just avoid places like Dixons, Jessops, Argos etc - they have incredible markups on the prices of their memory and you'll be fine.

Your best bet is to go to Jessops, tell them your budget, get them to lay out all the cameras in your budget in front of you and handle them. Cameras are like cars, what works for one person the next person will hate. Also, different people have different perceptions of quality when it comes to imaging, so be sure to take some shots in the store, get them to burn them to CD Rom for you and take them home to view them or have them printed.

Thanks I am not sure if their is a Jessops near me ( Rochdale ) will have to have a Google up on that one.

I was happy with my 2megapixel one until my gf bought this 3.2megapixel camera which makes mine look like a webcam in comparason.

You could try Argos (http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ArgosBrowseLister?storeId=10001&catalogId=4501&zone=&giftFinder=&langId=-1&attrValue_0=&attrValue_1=&attrValue_2=&attrValue_3=&attrValue_4=&priceFrom=&priceTo=&attrName_0=&attrName_1=&attrName_2=&attrName_3=&attrName_4=&TOTrail=&categoryId=36810&Trail=C%24cip%3D36801%3EC%24cip%3D36810&previousperPage=10&perPage=10&currPage=2&sortBy=2&x=10&y=16) for a camera, they aren't the cheapest, but why not use their 16 day no quibble money back guarantee (http://www.argos.co.uk/static/StaticDisplay/includeName/ReturnsAndRefunds.jsp.htm) to trial the camera. And if you find one better or cheaper within the 16 days, just return it for your cash back. :naughty:

Hehehe the one suggestion further up the page is in my bookmarks it has the spec I am interested in as I am not avid picture taker just nice to have a camera, plus it accepts the older SD card format which is just what I could use :)

Haha oh ok, sorry just a quality cam for the money! Cant believe how cheap they are, they equal to the sister cam (forget the model number) at £1400 in quality and shutter speed selections etc. I've also got an olympus cam, picked this up for £100, its ok, but to be honest i wish i spent another £150 on the s2 instead. First time round.

Although obviously your statutory rights are unaffected.

Have you considered a new phone?!

Some of the latest phones have incredible cameras on them - a long way from the rubbish ones they had a year or two ago.

I prefer older phones I have a Nokia 7110 right now in mint condition and fancy a 8910 for my next one or a 8310 as a second choice.

Can't you get one with a dial on? :)

You're probably ahead of the times here. I can imagine retro mobiles being all the rage in a few years' time. I might start collecting...

I have lost count with the people who think that, I had a few comments today on the Nokia 7110, on how well it looked aside the flip phone ding dong razza phones you see everywhere.

Anyways back to the camera thread ;) I like the one shown before the Canon one and am seeing into buying it with the printer too :)
