View Full Version : Silly question re upload & download
If you are uploading a file to your web space does it affect the speed at which you are able to download for the duration of the upload?
Yes, it can, if the upload is running near your max upload speed.
OK thanks. I thought uploading could affect simultaneous downloading but my son kept trying to convince me that the two were totally separate.

And now he'll try to tell you we're wrong :)

No doubt!

It's a feature of how the TCP protocol works. :)

And presumably something my newly graduated software engineer son should know ;)

Its not really a software engineering thing to be honest and more of a Networking thing :)
You may be right but I'm pretty sure Network Systems Architecture was part of his Level 3 modules and depending on his choices was also part of Level 4.
He's probably just trying to pull the wool over my eyes.
It's not a Systems Architecture thing either really, it's knowing how the TCP protocol works, and the fact that it has to send ACK packets back to the remote connection. Is there some reason he would want to "pull the wool over your eyes" ?
Probably wasn't the best turn of phrase.
He usually tries to convince me that the slowness on my PC has got nothing to do with him uploading a file from his PC - both are networked.
Ah. Now you can tell him you know better. :)

Point him to the god of cable modems (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/cmtips/downup.html) page on the subject.
