I'm looking at reolaceing my current car early next year, and it insurance group 12.

I've been looking at either an MR2 convertable (group 13), or a Jaguar XK8 (group 18)

Is there a way to find out roughly how much more there is cost wise between each group. I mean I can go to a insureance website, but I don't know the life history of the car (ie reg date, reg no.)

the group is not the only thing that determines the price of insurance- if in your area there are more MR2s stolen than XK8s, then the premium for the MR2 will be bumped up, so the groups can only give you a rough idea.

Best way to get an estimate is to find a car for sale which is a similar spec/ age to what you are looking for (ebay or exchange and mart) whack the registration number into confused.com to get an idea of the price ranges for insurance

Have a look on autotrader (http://www.autotrader.co.uk/) for the type you want and write down the regs then just change the car details on the online insurance quote it will give you an idea..

Also they take into account how much it costs to repair the vehicle.

If you go to some were like Confused.com you can get a quote as long as you know the age and specs of the car you are thinking about buying, it will give you some idea

Do yourself a big favour and stay away from the Jaguar!
Repair prices are crazy and that is what bumps up your insurance premium.
Toyota ain`t brilliant either.

you dont need the registration number etc to get a quote. Just pick a year and use the same year for both cars to get indicative quotes

Toyota's aren't great? They'll be running long after all the other cars are on the scrap heap.

Any Japanese car is better overall, thats what i meant although i didn`t make myself that clear on it.
Insurance wise, they will cost you a bit more to insure because of the repair costs.:)

A friend of mine just called to tell me about an insurance company who have just knocked £500 off the quote he got from his existing insurance company.

I found that the quote I got from the autotrader site to be about £3 cheaper for me, but then, they dont give you free breakdown cover like ecar do :) www.ecarinsurance.co.uk

If anyone does get a quote from ecar, can they just pop back in here to let us know if they saved you any dosh?

Thanx :tu:
