Samsung STB or a stand alone cable modem. The Pace STB's struggle with 1Mb.

Yup, Pace only do 1 Meg Max I think. You'll get a Sammy if you upgrade which is much quiker than the Pace badboys =P.
But Sammys do not support the full 10 Meg. *Just in case you upgrade to 10 in the future.

well , SAMSUNG can support upto 7 Mb . A PACE1000 , 2000 or 4000 can provide you upto 1 meg broadband service

what happens if you might want 10MB in future - can you ask for another box beyond the Sammy one
who makes that box ?
what about the 100MB they are talking about
wil you need yet another box beyond the box beyond the Sammy one ?

Err, not really you just get a SACM, and when the 100Meg is rolled out they will have to give customers new equipment and its gunna be a while till that happens.
And was there any point in being facetious?
