In August 1979 while buying the stuff I needed to go to college, one of the items was a Casio FX100 calculator, which came with a set of two Casio AA batteries to power it.

For the next 27 years, this calculator has been in regular use every week, and is STILL running on those original two AA batteries. They barely flicker when tested with any battery tester, but still have the power to drive the calculator.

Eat your heart out Duracell .... :D

That's an amazing set of batteries, but is it kept in a warm place overnight? If so this is meant to have a semi-recharging effect on normal batteries, and could be why :)

let's be fair though, a 27 year old calculator (older than me!) isn't exactly gonna be a high drain appliance!

Point well and truly missed, despite it being remarkable it's not as though the secrets of perpetual motion have been discovered

well ok that was blatently obvious but 27 years with regular use defies reason surely?

according to the manual it should last for 17,000 hours with a constant flashing cursor or 2 years when turned off. Strange, isnt that the same time period!

it consumes 0.0002W
