I just thought I would sing the praises of amazon.co.uk

I ordered a DVD on Saturday afternoon and it arrived at 7am today.
Seeing as this is over the weekend I am more than impressed with the service that I received.

This is a shining example to ALL other on-line retailers as to how the job should be done. :tu:

WELL DONE AMAZON :D

When I have bought stuff from them it has always been a bargain, and promptly delivered. However the one time I wanted to raise a complaint - that after running a search for a 'Minolta dimage' camera the site started recommending me p0rno books and videos - they just couldn't handle it. I got a standard reply, and on complaining again I got a different standard reply, and on complaining again (and threatening to go to my MP) I got a personal 'we're looking into it, we'll get back to you' reply ... after which I heard nothing.

Despite their good prices and rapid delivery, their bungling customer services department makes me nervous about buying from them for fear of what might happen if I actually had to complain about a faulty product rather than just their flakey site search engine.

Never had an issue with them. Had reason to call them twice before and always had good service. Last time was because i combined 2 orders to get rid of the deliverly charge on the second order. Looked the next day and there were still two orders. They offered to remove the delivery charge but they couldn't understand why the orders weren't combined. I found out last week why they hadn't been combined, when you combine an order you have to combine it and it shows you the combined order and asks you to confirm the action. Well this idiot didn't confirm it the first time!!! Well done Amazon for giving me my money back when it was my fault.

Mum ordered somethings and got the free delivery (not using Royal Mail)
It took ages to arrive and when it did, the delivery guy had scrawled loads of offencive comments over it becuase it was a "home" delivery service yet mum requested it go to her work address.
Amazon were extremely appologetic, gave her the details she needed to complain to the delivery company (think it's DHL) and amazon put in their own complaint.

Oh you've had dealings with that delightful company too?
Apparrently the guy who delived the box was rude to the receptionist too.

My ex missed a delivery and went to the DHL depot the next day to pick the item up.
Because she hadn't phoned before hand, the guy there was really shirty with her.

Anyway, mum ordered something else recently, got free delivery, but this time it came via royal mail, so it was on time, and no obnoxious markings

Absolutely agree 100% Amazon is the best, we use their services often. Amazon sets the example for other businesses.

But you can`t really complain about that one being Amazon's fault, the recommendations are made on the basis of what other customers have bought, and also what customers have recommended as suitable alternative purchases. If it were Amazon's problem, do you really think they would be risking a law suit on the basis of these choice suggestions :)

Well, I can't immediately see how the purchase of a digital camera is related to the purchase of an 18-rated video, but I can't claim to be an expert on the shopping habits of the average adult. Your link is a very effective illustration!

However Amazon UK expressly claims not to allow links, images etc from their adults-only section to appear on-screen unless they are deliberately requested by the user. It is surely technically possible to filter the 'reccomendations' function so that it is consistent with the stated policy. The fact that they have not done so lays them open to criticism, although as they aren't selling anything that needs a licence I don't imagine a lawsuit would stick...

I would imagine that someone who bought the camera also happened to buy a stash of porn, hence them becoming associated in the Amazon database. The examples in that link are all deliberate abuses of the Amazon recommendation system, so it is possible that someone did the same with the camera.

I wasn`t aware of this part of Amazon's policy, and I agree that since they have that policy in place that they should indeed filter the results to ensure that they stick to it. In this case I can see that you have a legitimate complaint.

They confessed to it only when I complained, in the first of their standard emails. The email was apparently written to answer the general question 'what's your policy on sale of adult material?' rather than anything like the issue I raised.

I'm ashamed to admit that, despite setting out with some determination, their heel-dragging and refusal to enter into personal dialogue was a very effective tactic on their part - I kind of lost the will to keep pursuing it. They may have lost a customer as a result, however. :(

Are you sure someone hasn't used your computer to search for dodgy dvd's?
That's what's happened to me, no when I look at dvd recommendations I have to make sure no one is looking!
Course you could have bought something where people have recommended/also bought some dodgy stuff and being down the bottom of the page you haven't noticed, and therefore your interest in this material has been recorded.

That was my first thought, but I make a habit of periodically cleaning out my cookies. In fact, I was only able make the exact same dodgy recommendations appear again if I used amazon not logged in, and with no amazon cookie already on my machine.
