http://www.orange.co.uk/service_plans/downloads/payg_services_costs.pdf

see page 18 - it says unlocking your Orange Pay as You go phone for use on another network is available for a one off £20 charge.

at the moment some nokias eg. n70 are not unlockable by your dodgy backstreet shop so this might be the answer?

Same for Vodafone PAYG phones - had an old Siemens phone that we gave to a relative to replace an older lost Siemens. To stick with Orange, VF wanted £20 to unblock + a new Orange SIM. To get a new VF Sim was £2 with £2 credit!

Virgin unlocked my phone (number of years ago) for nothing when they saw I had already put a certain ammount of top up onto it.

I think if you ask any network they are obliged to provide you with an unlock code, for a price. My phone can't be unlocked without taking the whole damn thing apart, guy at market wants £15 and to take it away with him and I get it back the next week he is there.....yeh right.

Might aswell give Orange the money and have it done with no fuss.

All of the networks will unlock phones, but with the newer phones it can take upto 28days.

Generally speaking, with older phones it is better going to the market and getting it done there and then for a fiver. With the newer ones the markets charge more, and sometimes need to keep the phone while they flash the firmware on it (or give it to someone else to do).

IMO old phone= market job, new phone = pay network.

....or buy it from CPW on Virgin as they tend to send out sim free phones :D

O2 also do this - ie. their contract phones aren't locked to the O2 network - e.g. you can bung an orange sim into an O2 one without having to get it unlocked.
