I got some new pets yesterday, a cute little pair of 5 week old baby rats. There are some pics included in this post but I've padded with some whitespace in case you don't want to see them, although they are insanely cute. The mink hooded (the one without any white on his face) is called Merry and the mink capped is called Pippin.

Boiled basmati rice with peas, corn and red sweet peppers. They dug out all the veg and left the rice, although the rice was all gone when I woke up this morning.

Apart from the pepper, it's pretty much what I put in a stir fry! Who'd have thought it.

 So you basically chuck in your left over dinner and they're happy. Come to think of it, I've never seen rat food in the pet shop. It's an education is this thread. I can't look after myself let alone an animal, otherwise I'd have a couple of rats.

you can buy rat food... it does the job, but it's a bit plain. they do eat pretty much anything, given the chance ;)

some vey good info (http://www.shunamiterats.co.uk/diet.html)

There are some things you have to avoid though, If I remembver correctly they can't have food with things like gravy on it. Also IIRC salt is a big no no. Those two on thier own can make giving them leftovers tricky.
Rats do make great pets though, they are the most inteligent rodents that I know of and providing you dont get a biter can essentially be left out of the cage most of the time.
My sister used to have a large Albino, he was way over a foot long (not including the tail) and you could just take him out of his cage, put him down on the couch and he would climb up on the nearest person and goto sleep on either thier shoulder or lap.

So you feed them stir fry and with the looks of the latest pics, supply them with lager too. I wish I was a rat :D

Salt I can understand - only small so it would be easy to eat too much.

Awwwww - cute little chap. Great close up - those whiskers.

I saw a rat today. Most unusual to see them during the day - was scuttling about in a flower bed in Leeds centre. That bit of a park opposite the bus station, if anyone knows it. Only a young one. Just shows how close wildlife is.

I hope not, they're brothers ;)

That's what the person that sold us our last pair of Gerbils said, they turned out to be brother and sister and ended up mating (:Yikes:) and having lots of baby Gerbils, was a nightmare!

Easy enough to tell the difference with rats. The females don't have tail-mounted torpedoes like the males do (seriously - male rats have huge nads). :)

Had to bump this thread to post this video. Merry will only eat peas if I put them in the water bowl so that he can fish them out
