View Full Version : More than 1 SACM
I have just rang NTL and asked for another SACM, they say yeah np but i have to buy form another source.
Is this true, why can't NTL supply me with 2 SACM's ??
Money isn't isn't an issue here, nor am i in debt with them....as a matter of fact i am £200.00 + in credit which is more than :welcome:
Cheers :):)

What are you trying to do with this second SACM?
a) have 2mb of bandwidth connected through appropriate hardware
b) connect a second PC / internet fridge to NTL

Well, to the best of my knowledge ( i could be wrong here) NTL don't like you sharing 1 connection, so i thought i would have 2 modems, 1 for me and 1 for my g/f.
Get a router and share it, I think (must check) that you can have 3 pcs on the same connection they just don't offer support for router issues

You can have up to three computers connected to a router to one connection if you wanted. 3 is an arbitrary limit set by ntl.
Thanks for the replies guys, but i would dearly love for to have a modem each.
So the question is, why can't NTL supply me with another modem.
As i said in my first post, money is not an issue.
Thanks :)
Straight from the horses ar.. I mean mouth
You are permitted to use routers, and the connection of a dedicated hardware router or firewall shall not be considered a PC for the purposes of this section
I think it's because they only allow one SACM to an address normally but I'm sure someone will tell you the right answer
its probably a billing issue LOL, as in they can supply you with it and charge you for it ( i.e. you would pay for a completely seperate connection ) but they cant put 2 broadband connections into the billing system for one house...

I know of people with more than one SACM at a single address, but they are on seperate bills.
ntl set my mates house up with 3 SACM's, but it is student accomodation and the 3 customers have seperate bills.
Having said that, ntl could give you a 2nd SACM and bill your G/F for it, but it is not a 'standard' offer, so you'd have to sak around to find the right person to set it up for you.

which area are you in?
yes you can have more than 1 modem at the same house but different billing accounts are needed in different names AFAIK

okies... well I phoned the local sales team who should of been able to help only to be told what you were told, 1 per house no exceptions. I kinda hit a brick wall with this to be honest. The only thing I can suggest you do is ring your local C/S and speak to a supervisior in their and see if they can do it for you. If you lived in the region I work in I would of been able to help you, but alas you don't :(
Sorry I couldn't be more help

Try aiming high line manager or higher and stay perfectly calm and explain this is already done in other areas and brings in extra revenue for NTL. Might get somewhere if you make it sound they are refusing money.
why bother? you can buy a router for £30-40, getting a a second SACM will cost minimum £18 a month? ( assuming you have to have a seperate BB account to get a second SACM )
*edit* alternatively, ask for the 'console + BB service' and just use it for 2 pcs rather than 1 pc and 1 xbox/ps2...

Indeed - are you already on 1Mb. Are you really using so much of that bandwidth that you cannot share?

I have three pcs sharing a 1mb connection. My son plays online games and never complains about lag. My daughter plays some online games but more downloads things for the sims and she never has any problems. I listen to music streams while this happens and find nothing wron with the connection.
I use a Linksys router to ethernet on pcs.
even if you arent already on 1MB, it would probably be cheaper to upgrade your speed ( if necessary ) and get a router that to get a seperate BB account ( which you may have to pay an install fee for too )

All we want is 2 modems, 1 for each computer.......what is wrong with that.
If i had a 500Mb connection we would still want 2 modems.
Again i STRESS money is not an issue here.
I have tried a router and don't like it/don't want it<------- my option, please just let me want 2 modems..........its my choice surley??
I wish i had never even posted the question now

Hey dont
We're trying to help. The ongoing conversations you are trying to have with your NTL region are something only you can pursue, and unfortunately don't seem to be having too much luck.
If money is not a problem, I think most here would recommend you went for a wireless network rather than a second SACM, it allows more flexible sharing of printers, files etc, doesn't cause problems when you want to move a PC to another room or different corner of the same room, if you game, then friends with wireless can come round and patch in without difficulty to play against you with virtually 0 lag, and if either of you have a laptop, then use in the back garden, in front of the TV, wherever is a great benefit.
I certainly would not want a second SACM, just more NTL cables and hardware to go wrong.
The gaming pack which allocates a second IP address gives equal cabling and allows both of you to use the same SACM.
A corporation when connecting to the internet does not connect each indiviual computer to the net, but to a router and that connects to the net, this is best practice. I guess this is why we are all recommending what would be considered best practice, and permitted by NTL.
Modern routers pretty much self configure, especially the wireless ones, this should be a saturday morning plug and pray excercise, rather than waiting for NTL missed appointments, destruction of front walls and damaged plasterwork.
Good luck whichever way you choose.
