Hi all, it's my first post so please be gracious! I'm working in Nepal and shortly to go back to UK for home leave to an NTL broadband-enabled house. I'd like to be able to access a (linux) server here using SSH, but would feel happier if I could give it an IP address (or even IP range) to restrict incoming clients. I know that NTL doesn't give a static IP per se, although according to many posts they don't often change. But I won't know my own NTL IP until I get there and I'd prefer to lock it down a bit at least in the two or three days I'm between A and B. Basically, if I could find out the block of IP addresses that NTL uses, then I could do that, and then when I'm back in the UK, I can narrow it down further. Thanks for any help/suggestions.

ntl have hundreds of blocks, it would be a very long list and I doubt anyone has an up to date version (other then ntl's network people).

I could certainly send you the list of all ntl's current prefixes (Paul M FYI if the rest of us didn't know ntl's current blocks we'd have a lot of trouble knowing how to route stuff to them, there are lists on RIPE and a simple command on a peering router gives them all as well.) however just the list for your area would make far more sense.

http://www.ripe.net/

Pop your IP address in there and it should show the IP addresses being used in your area.

BTW The full list isn't that large, apparently only 148 prefixes.

ntl as a whole -

On the NTL cable modem service, the possible in-service IP address ranges are:

62.252.xxx.xxx to 62.255.xxx.xxx.
80.0.xxx.xxx to 80.7.xxx.xxx.
81.96.xxx.xxx to 81.111.xxx.xxx.
82.0.xxx.xxx to 82.31.xxx.xxx.
213.104.xxx.xxx to 213.107.xxx.xxx.

Interesting - I presently have a 86.4.xxx.xxx address.

213.104.xxx.xxx to 213.107.xxx.xxx.

86.0.0.0/11 is for ntl's use as well.

Infact if you allow the following:

62.252.0.0/14
80.0.0.0/13
81.96.0.0/12
82.0.0.0/11
86.0.0.0/11
213.104.0.0/14

You're probably fairly safe.

/14 CIDR = 255.252.0.0 standard notation
/13 CIDR = 255.248.0.0 standard notation
/12 CIDR = 255.240.0.0 standard notation
/11 CIDR = 255.224.0.0 standard notation

I would personally use a free dynamic DNS service like the one offered by www.dyndns.com (http://www.dyndns.com). Sign up for an account which will give you a hostname which attaches itself to your current IP address. Set your server to allow the hostname and hey presto even with a dynamic IP you can have a fully secure connection.

p.s. you will need to use this program on your PC at home to keep the hostname and IP syncronised http://www.dyndns.com/support/clients/ (http://www.dyndns.com/support/clients/)

All the best
