you can use VOIP via ntl 10meg- i imagine due to the high up/ downstream bandwidth you would get decent quality as well.

Not sure what you mean by releasing the telephone numbers though?

You wouldn't NTL 10Mb for VOIP 2Mbps would do. And as for getting very decent quality, that would only apply to 2 NTL customers calling each other across VOIP. if the call has to be routed anywhere else outside of the NTL network, then the quality would be dependant on internet traffic at the time and whether the routers that the data is passing through have QoS (Quality of Service) available to them. That is why when you speak to an Indian call centre during the day the line is always of a terrible quality, the cost of the calls maybe a lot cheaper be at times the quality of the calls also suffer.

Hope this helps.

Nonsense, I have been using Voip services via NTL's 2Mb broadband service for some time now and I can tell you the call quality is the same as any normal landline connection regardless of who you call. I use sipgate and voipfone if that helps.

That is what I said you can use 2Mbps, the point I was making was that you didn't have to go to the expense of getting a 10Mbps line just for VOIP. At times the call quality on the receiving end of the call can be lower, it might not be that noticable to the VOIP user.

i find skype uses about 6-7KB/s each way at most - 1Mb will easily cut it.

Here is some info i posted in another thread...

Depending on what VoIP Codec is used will determine the amount of upload Bandwidth required.

Most will use either

G.711 (Best Quality) (64k) - 80Kbps with IP Overhead or
G.729AB (Compressed - Mobile Quality) (8k) - 24Kbps with IP Overhead.
G.723 (Really Compressed - Crappy Quality) (5.3kbps) - 16Kbps with IP Overhead.

Which roughly means that with a single 128k uplink you could have 1 x G.711 calls, 5 x G.729AB calls or 8 x G.723 Calls.

So if you have the option in your VoIP software you can now set it to what quality you desire depending on your line speed.

Basically anything above 128k should be G.711, however you can get away with it on 128k, its just if anything else is using much of the link - well - you may get a bit of chop.

Forget about your download speed, its your UPLOAD speed that matters and 128k is more than enough never mind a meg.

bare in mind though that the upload rate on 1m is 100k not 128 and if you do speed tests (or should I say when I do speed tests) you may get an upload rate in the region of 80 to 90k.

i meant the upload for a 1Mb service should be plenty :)

slightly off topic, but does anyone know if you can change the compression in skype?

just done a speed test - my upload is listed as 94k (actual) when testing via adslguide.

NTL Do not themselves offer a VOIP service. You will need to get something like Skype and buy a telephone number subscription for it (quite cheap)

:welcome:

no idea what is going on (never bought skype credit)

one thing that springs to mind though- do you have spam filtering on your mail account? might be possible that an over zealous spam filter is moving the mail to a spam/ trash folder

Ta. I have Norton but I always check the spam folder before emptying it. Got a message from skype support saying would reply within 72 hours. Thats nearly up and i dont have faith as not responded to other queries before.
