View Full Version : Terayon TJ210 died?

Sorry that this is a moaning 1st post, but I've just got off the phone to the Indian call centre.

Got up this morning to find my internet link was down. Checked the Terayon CM and the 'CABLE' LED was not lit. Nothing too unusual. So powered it down. Came home from work and powered it back up and the best I can get is the 'CABLE' LED slowly flashing before turning off after a couple of minutes.

So back to dialup to check NTL status. This is where I start to worry. Supposedly there has been "Network optimisation" in my area this morning from Midnight to 6am. At this point I called Tech Support.

Spoke to somebody in Tech Support (assume it was India) who confirmed that my CM had not connected. He then asked me to turn off the CM for 30s. As if I hadn't tried that and surely the previous 6 hours had been long enough? I almost heard him counting the seconds in the background. And yep it didn't help one bit.

So he books me an Engineers visit. The only problem with that is it's this coming Friday afternoon. I'm prepared to wait but I've had that many missed PM appointments it's unreal. I have been told by somebody in the UK that the engineers will not honour afternoon appointments for the area of Nottingham that I live in. Despite telling him that I need an AM appointment he refused to budge. So I'm stuck.

So as I'm not likely to see an engineer till I manage to get a morning appointment (read for that at least 2 weeks) can somebody give me a technical reason why my CM has died or if there is anything I can try.

Thanks

This won't help much but........ it's a good thing that it's died as that modem isn't capable of sustaining 10Mbit. When/if an engineer turns up lets hope it is the modem then he will kit you out with the latest NT:250 modem.

It doesn't sound as though the modem has died I'm afraid that is normal behaviour if I can't lock onto a signal - rapid flashes mean access has been denied (account blocked). So it does look like you need an engineers visit! They may well just try a new modem first as the newer 250's have better upstream capability (they can shout louder).

Where abouts are you in Nottingham Postman Pat? I do know that after 4pm in some areas of Nottingham you won't get an engineer to attend for safety reasons. (E.g Meadows, Broxtowe and Aspley are the areas that I know of)

It seems madness to me that people cannot go about their work safely after a certain time! Its like living in the dark ages but I guess NTL has to put it's staffs safety first.

Oh and there is not much you can do if the cable light is off/flashing either the modem has had it's day or their are cable/signal issues.

I'm in the Meadows. And I was told sometime ago it is related to ensuring the safety of the engineer. I have absolutely no problem with that.

But why don't they flag my account so that only AM appointments can be made. It's so frustrating trying to explain to somebody in a call centre that making a PM appointment is a waste of time as the engineer will not attend. I tried explaining this today and was 'promised' the engineer will attend.

i had the same problem a few weeks ago (mid Jan).. turned out to be that someone had broken open the cabinet at the end of the street and my cable had been pulled out.

unfortunately, i have the tj210 too, and the engineer was very sure that 10mb product wasnt being rolled out yet, so I wouldnt have a problem with my current setup... funny... I was already on 10mb, so he didnt/wouldnt replace the modem.

I'm pretty sure I've still got a cable feed. Just used Robin Walker's DocsDiag to interrogate the CM. This is what I got.

DocsDiag v030720 Copyright 2001-3 Robin Walker rdhw@cam.ac.uk

Terayon DOCSIS Cable Modem: <<HW_REV: 6.62; VENDOR: Terayon; BOOTR: NONE; SW_REV: 1.7.14; MODEL: >>

System up time = 0 days 00h 00m 19.81s
Downstream channel ID = 0
Downstream channel frequency = 0 Hz
Downstream received signal power = 4.1 dBmV
Upstream channel ID = 0
Upstream channel frequency = 0 Hz
SigQu: Signal to Noise Ratio = 17.7 dB
Cable modem status = Not synchronized
Upstream transmit signal power = 8.0 dBmV
Date and Time = unset
Configuration filename =

Seems a bit strange that the configuration filename is blank, or does it only get this if it establishes a link?

I think it is downloading the config file when the lights fast flash after establishing a connection. Have you tried docsdiag - log. I think mine still records when I similar problems in 2001!
