Hi all

Thanks for all you help in the previous post of mine. My instalation is on Wed 15th Feb and I have a few questions please;

If I recall correctly when a friend had cable installed (I have never used cable before, Ive come from aDSL) he had to run some horrid software from a CD to setup his mailbox, user ID etc. He connected his modem directly to his PC.

I plan to connect my modem directly to a Netgear wireless router, and have no plan to use the NTL supplied POP3 mailbox so do not want to setup a POP3 account. I dont want the free anti virus, and yes, you guessed it, I dont want to put that CD anywhere near my computer. I want the connectivity only, not the "extras" and ESPECIALLY not the NTL branding all over IE and Outlook express! (I use Outlook anyhow).

Can anybody tell me If I can just hook up the router and go? Or am I forced into installing this CD to activate the connection?

If the latter is the case, am I correct in thinking that it will dick about with all my IE setting and default logos etc? (Which will really boil my ****!) - and what does the registration actually do if this is the case? Is the connection "dead" when it is first installed?

Thanks again!

Firstly sorry for being so blunt but you seem a very angry person.

Anyway down to your question......you may not be able to run the netgear for the registration but will have to do it wired, you will not have to run the disk if you have a lan card in but you only need to change these setting-from tools at the top of the IE page go to internet options then connections tab make sure the never dial has a spot, in LAN settings make sure there are no ticks in any boxes.

Turn you modem/stb on then your pc, got to http://autoreg.autoregister.net for a modem or www.ntlworld.com (http://www.ntlworld.com) for a stb.

Once you have registered bring in the netgear, you may have to restart all 3 bits of equipment to get them to work together.

Unfortunately if you only have a usb you will need to run the disk, or extract the drivers for the disk if you have the know how.

Firstly, thanks for the observation! ( I guess? )

Thanks for your assistnace. Am I correct in assuming that the URL you mention is effectivley the same place the CD would take you to?

I do have a LAN card in my PC, so browsing to that location shouldnt be an issue. I need to be directly atached to the cable modem to do this you think?

Thanks again.

Yes the URL will take you to modem reg page.

Hope it all goes to plan.

There is an "Article" link at the top of the page which leads to an article on setting up without the CD http://www.cableforum.co.uk/forum/article.php?a=13
