View Full Version : Confusing connection

Hi, this is my first post, because this is the first time I've been truly stumped by my connection.

The internet keeps randomly dropping out, but I can still connect to sites through proxies. MSN messenger and streaming audio seem fine, but I can't access websites.

I live in cambridge and have NEVER been able to connect to the local theatre's wbesite (cornex.co.uk) while friends who are also on ntl (and live in cambridge) can.

I am currently posting this through a proxy, as the net dropped out again while browsing this site.

I don't want to have to call technical support because I know what they'll say and don't fancy spending about £5 to be told to reboot my pc/modem.

Any help would be appreciated :D

How are you connecting? USB or NIC. Also do you use a router or is it a direct connection?

Hi, I use a router, and the modem connects to the computer via ethernet.

No, i haven't. Unfortunately, my computer is at the other end of the house to the computer with the router and modem.

typical ntl cop out that is m8 router

all the posts on here about slow speeds drop outs etc and i bet the router wasnt to blame for many of them if not any

can only speak from my experiance i got the run around from support india

finally got my modem swapped over after 3 weeks problems gone

The problems are still ongoing, and I can't even log into ebay through a proxy, which is evil because I may have won an auction ¬_¬ gah.

If i reconnect the modem it works for about 30 seconds then dies.

I've had some problems today too, came back from town to see my IP address had changed, probably from a modem reset, after that i can only access webpages (doesn't work if i use proxies) and IRC networks.
Giganews, partypoker.com, outlook express and MSN won't connect at all.

I've reset the modem a few times, but no change. I'm connected through ethernet, no router etc, so that's not the problem.

I'm suffering the exact same - can't get near ebay or my Worldpay online merchant account. Can't access my yahoo mail and having a problem sending email through one of my ntl accounts. Weird!!!

My connection seems pretty spot on though - check the gif attached.

Same odd kind of problems here, most websites are working ok, my ip is also changed from what i remember it to be.

but msn messanger and google talk dont want to work, also azureus is getting gallons of "connection timeout" messages for all the trackers.

i can get ebay no problem, but google.co.uk just simply wont load in firefox, works like normal in IE, no proxys configured for either.

Also in Belfast.

Just tried a traceroute, this is what a got:

My traceroute trying to reach www.ebay.co.uk (http://www.ebay.co.uk)

I'm also using Mozilla - no proxies selected.

What BT postcode area are you?

Same here, follwing a so-called upgrade from 3COM CMX modem and 1Mb to ntl:250 modem and 10Mb.

What's your modem model and service level?

> have NEVER been able to connect to the local theatre's wbesite

FWIW I can connect to it. I find that a connection drop-out causes IE/Windows to cache something such that the faied URL then does not work until the next reboot.

Good luck!

I have the same problem with only normal web page browsing and irc allowed, not even secured browsing will connect, along with the usual suspects, MSN mess. bf2, AOLim, etc
I was also forced to take a new ip last nite, in the 82.7.* range
I am in BT6

** I have tried from 3 different OS, skipped out the router, restarted modem, got numerous ips, nothing works for now
This problem is on the NTL side

***I have a Terayon on 1mb conn

What modem? What service speed?

Mr Angry
07-02-2006, 16:07
Someone I've just spoken with advises that there is an issue reported last night in the Rathcoole area - but it's not very high on the priority list.

Perhaps more areas are now affected?

Maxi - I'm pretty much in the same boat as you, secure browsing of any sort is a no, no at the moment.

The service status line has maintenance in Belfast for tuesday (today) morning 12am-6am, which seems to be what happened, but they did not fix whatever they were doing, or else managed to cause more problems.

Mr Angry
07-02-2006, 16:17
I couldn't even access the 2006 service status page, but at least from what you're saying it appears something is definately "up".

My connection which has been rock solid all week, see my earlier post of 9mb+ just three hours ago, has now dropped to around the 3mb mark.

The speed isn't really an issue at the moment but not being able to access secure sites is starting to become a serious pain in the toys.

Maxisaitech2

Yea, im with you on this, its like theyve closed certain ports at their end

Ive tried many ips with them but I cant get off this range, and I think its this range that has the problem. My connection was fine until sometime this morning when it cut out and made me take this new ip and the rest is history!

I hope they realise theres something wrong soon and most of all! fiix it!

Maxi,

Are you having trouble with ntl mail?

All my other mails send / receive as usual but all ntl addresses are reporting errors in outlook.

Maxisaitech2
07-02-2006, 16:33
I cant even connect to pop or smtp ntlworld, its like theyve blocked the mail ports for me too lol

I can check my mail on webmail.ntlworld but can't receive it from a mail client on my computer.

Mr Angry

Whoever is out there tweaking - keep it up!

Suddenly my three email addresses from my dial-up ntl account are working in outlook.

The remainder, on my BB account are still stuffed as far as outlook is concerned.

Ooops!! now all my homepage accounts have disappeared.

I'm in north Belfast. The connection slowed right down then went off and came back a minute later. Everything worked after that.

I am having problems with my internet browsing, I looked for help but not knowing what to ask just browsed to here. My problem is this, I can play counterstrike source for hours at a time no probs (Latency 20-27) great, but when i stop playing and go to the internet browsing, no go. Emails also no go. Brother is on ntl and his is fine. I have a fast computer P4 3GHz loads of ram big hdd and a 2mb connection. I looked in this forum and saw some people use newsgroups to download so tried that, it is a bit come day go day but when it works it flies getting stuff at 230kb/s so very happy there but again my internet browser is soooooo slow some pages give the error page with the offer to detect network settings. So frustrating and i am no noob here. Had pc for years built myself and it has run flawlessly with winxp for 2 years and no re-installs i am just blindly hoping is is a prob with ntl but what can i say to tech support. I have AVG anti virus zonealarm firewall all updated all comp scanned defragged disk cleanup adware checked and a connection that runs when it damn well likes. never really had a prob with ntl before so, i don't want to slag them off but this doesn't seem to be a problem for just me. I wonder if playin my game on the internet is getting close to the cap and they are slowing me on purpose. When some of my web pages actually load there are graphics missing and just little annoying bits. frightened to buy anything online incase pressing the refresh buys me two or three things. AT a loss for ideas and very bored with it all.

I got no idea whats going on, some ips in this range will allow just browsing, some will allow browsing and irc, but none of them will allow msn aol secure browsing, games, anything that uses other ports.

I think theyve put people onto this range either by accident, or they have done it on purpose not realising they havent set it up right yet...

Couple of ways, Code601. First, scroll up to the top of this page and click the 'Connection' link.

For a little more detail, go to all-nettools (http://www.all-nettools.com/toolbox,net), scroll down to the 'Proxy Test' section and click the 'Check' button.

Mr Angry

Seems to be - I've not had a connection below 3mb all day and, at times (lunar / solar variances & boxer short / shirt collar sizes considered), have reached 9.45mb.

How is yours?

Maxisaitech2
