Been on NTL for a while but now want to try and create a website. I'm going to do that with Dreamweaver MX 2004 but just wanted some newbie advice on how to use my NTL wesbpace. I've tried my :- http://homepage.ntlworld.com/user.name but that comes back and says 'the page cannot be found'. Do I need to do something first and what do i do with the website when I've created it (ftp to NTL server/get it on there another way ?) Is the webspace just my own area of space on there server and once the website is on there how do people find it over the internet - will it automatically be found by search engines ?. I'll be using Internet Explorer. Basically where do I start !!. I've mailed NTL support twice with no reply !.
Cheers in anticipation, Grinder21up

hiya & :welcome:

First thing you need to do is ftp an index.htm file into your webspace root folder & then you can connect to it via http. Up to you what the file contains - from "welcome to my homepage" to a full blown website.

Be aware that the functionality of the NTL webspace is limited - it doesn't support server side extensions, for example.

you might like to read the article in the following link for more info on this

<edit> you could also have a look in the following thread I've just noticed on Dreamweaver

Thanks Homealone - thats great. I now have a homepage :- http://homepage.ntlworld.com.user.name/index.htm. This'll keep me quiet for a bit (!!?) but just 2 other quickies. Do u know how to create sub-directories as I want to create a site within here for a club I'm in, so I want something like :- http://.......user.name/bowlsclub/index.htm. And should the index and subsequent pages be htm or html - not sure what the difference is (apart from an 'L' !). Cheers, Grinder21up

yay, nice one - I'm glad it worked.:)

the answer to your first question will depend on the program you use for ftp, the only one I have ever used is Powerdesk Pro, which works just like windows explorer & creating a subdirectory in the webspace is done in just the same way as you would on a hard disk. i.e right click in the root directory & choose 'new' & 'folder' - yours may be different though.

For the second question - hey if htm works, go with it, if it doesn't then try html - I think it should work with both, but I'm not sure.:dozey:

Nice one again Gaz. You create the sub folders in Dreamweaver when you 'save to remote server'. Thanks for sorting me out. Now I'll knock up a website that says more than 'Hello Peter' !!!. Cheers Pete.
