Is the speed of the 10Meg service 10,000 or 10,240, i'm a bit confused.

1024Kb = 1Mb but many companies are too lazy to write it fully lol ;) The full speed will probably sit under the full 10Mb though due to overheads and contention ;)

well it depends on how ya look at it in the real world it would be like 10240:) in NTL`s world its between 1024 - 3072 the latter if your very very very lucky:) just had to say it :)

(and yes, that is the speed in this real world ;))

Nope 1000kbit/s = 1Mbit.

The config file is, as is common, set slightly higher than 10Mbit.

Nah I generally don't follow that.

10Mbit on ntl is 10240000 bits per second which = 10,240kbps which = 1,280KB/s maximum without overheads. With overheads that vary depending what you're using to download with you're looking at around the 1,100KB/s - 1,200KB/s mark depending on how amazing your PC and network card are and which way the wind is blowing.

10Mbit in strictly technical terms is 10000000 bits per second, 10,000kbps. Often quoted as 10,240kbps due to the PC types and their 8bits/byte ideas, it fits better in with the model of 1024 bytes in a kilobyte, which isn't actually accurate but that's another story.... ;)

There, both the definitive answer as far as ntl go and as far as the techy standards go :)

Ig is usually right - when you transfer data you talk in raw bitrates and bring them down by manageable 1000s where necessary. It's only when the data stops moving that the annoying data storage people come in with their powers of two.

So the file is 10.24 Megabits Per Second.

And to expound a little more the confusion is because there are two definitions of kilo/mega e.t.c in use here. The mathematical definition of kilo is 1000, and mega is 1,000,000. Simple enough, and used most places. However computers work in binary and powers of 2 work better there. Conveniently 2^10 is 1024, so 1024 bytes became a kilobyte. And by extension a megabyte is 2^20 (which is 1048576). You can see this difference quite easily when you buy a new hard drive. If you buy a 250 gb hard drive (for instance), and format it, Windows will not tell you that the capacity is 250gb. It'll tell you that the capacity is 232GB. That's because 250,000,000,000 is about 232x 2^30.
Line speed seems to be a little schizophrenic, sometimes being quoted in the mathematical sense, and sometimes in the computer sense. NTL seems to have split the difference and has gone with 1024000 as their definition of 'mega' (instead of the mathematical 1000000, or the computer 1048576).

The problem arises because the kilobit is often used as a synonym for the kibibit. A kilobit is technically 10^3, giving 1000 bits, while a kibibit is 2^10, giving 1024 bits. The same goes for megabits and mebibits, 10^6 and 2^20 respectively.

For my 2p worth.
As Rakhal says historically 1024 bytes became a kilobyte. BUT just to throw more confusion into it a megabyte has always been considered as 1000 kilobytes. hence the 1,024,000 bytes mentioned before not the 1048576 quoted.

It is a common problem when people buy memory/Hdd etc... that mention x number of megabytes and when installed they get either more or less than hoped for.

But i suppose you have to ask yourself, does it actually matter. NTL rarley come anywhere near either figure.

you get 1.25 which is the max download you will get from ntl's 10meg service
