Consistency in underperformance - if nothing else.

My connection truly rocks!!

Sun, 29 Jan 2006 18:22:12 GMT

1st 512K took 8313 ms = 61.6 KB/sec, approx 468 Kbps, 0.5 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1406 ms = 364.2 KB/sec, approx 2768 Kbps, 2.7 Mbps
3rd 512K took 42219 ms = 12.1 KB/sec, approx 92 Kbps, 0.1 Mbps
4th 512K took 31735 ms = 16.1 KB/sec, approx 122 Kbps, 0.1 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 863 Kbps, 0.85 Mbps

How old is the PC?

Are you connect via a router? (some routers cannot handle 10Mb)

My dad had this Problem and his speed is about 5Mb, the most the Terayon can handle (according to uses on this site)

Hi David,

No router in the loop.

Running a custom build Win XP SP2 system with 1.75gb RAM, AMD Athlon 2.4ghz XP processor. HDD's - 250GB, 160GB & 80GB.

Everything was "splendid" until the 10mb rollout and I was more than happy with my 3mb connection.

One of the regular posters on here is doing a bit of research / R&D on my behalf (cheers!!) so I'm prepared to sit it out for a while to see what happens.

Just thought I'd make everyone else feel slightly better about their own connections by seeing my connection speeds!!

On the "upside" - The RIAA are probably toasting NTL for this little faux pas as I'm sure the collateral damage from P2P across Britain has dropped commensurately.

What part of Belfast are you in? I might be able to find out if there are any local network issues.

Is the NIC running Full Duplex 100M?

Fingy, I'm in Dunmurry, cheers for any info.

David, It's an RTL8139 which runs at 10 full mode or auto mode. If I switch to 100 mode (full or half) she just reports herself as being "unplugged".

Network Address is listed as "not present" and she's set for a 64k receive buffer size.

Sound like a network card issue. My dads card was only 10Mb and was OK on the 3Mb but when we upgraded to 10Mb his speeds were really carp.

I changed the network card set it to 100Mb full duplex and the was no trouble after that.

David, it's a 10/100 card and if I switch her config to 100 full or half duplex she won't play ball at all.

If I throw my Linksys WRT54GS (with speedbooster) into the loop she appears as 100mb full duplex but the speeds are still the same (see: "pants").

Have you tried new NIC drivers?

there might me a corrupt file thats stopping you running at 100Mb

if you have a terayon tj210, it only has a 10Mb interface on it... thus setting your network card in your pc to 100Mb (full or half duplex) will cause the connection to be lost. This aint a problem, its the way it works..

I understand that, but in my earlier thread I said that I have had the same problem (Terayon modem and a NIC only giving <1Mb) and I changed the NIC and got speed of about 5Mb.

Something wrong with autonegotiate, just because you manually set anything doesn't mean it will automatically run at that speed?
