When i got 2meg Broadband it was 2meg(few bits short), now it says up to 2meg.
So i'm not getting what i pay for, at the moment i get about 1.6meg if i'm lucky, normally 1.3

How can they suddenly do this?
Is it the 10meg users?
Have ntl gone beyond there capability?

All i want is the 2meg i was promised, nothing more nothing less :(

think yerself lucky you aint on 10mg at the mo m8 cause you would be 8mg short:) seems to me that huge amount of people are suffering since these new speed bands have been introduced and it does not seem to be getting better as yet but hey we all have faith in ntl thats why we have been with them for years and im sure within the next couple of years it will all be sorted out:) they wont let us down...........

The point is, i paid for 2meg, not up to 2meg.
I checked the packages and it now says up to, and i'm not a happy bunny :(

yep with the 10meg rollout all users will be affected by the added contention. Although it should be much less noticeable on 2meg.

But they changed the wording on the package. I used to have 2meg Period.

Here we go, its late and i get this

Wed, 25 Jan 2006 23:50:42 UTC

1st 512K took 2266 ms = 225.9 KB/sec, approx 1717 Kbps, 1.7 Mbps
2nd 512K took 2250 ms = 227.6 KB/sec, approx 1730 Kbps, 1.7 Mbps
3rd 512K took 2250 ms = 227.6 KB/sec, approx 1730 Kbps, 1.7 Mbps
4th 512K took 4047 ms = 126.5 KB/sec, approx 961 Kbps, 0.9 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1535 Kbps, 1.5 Mbps

Broadband is and has always been "up to" the speed because of the contention ratios. NTL has typically had better ratios than ADSL so it is less noticeable but with the 10Mb tier it is now more noticeable.

The only way to get a guaranteed 2Mb would be to have your own leased-line and that would be considerably more expensive than £24.99 per month!

I'm pretty sure that changing of packages i.e. from 2Mb to up to 2Mb will be covered in the contract you have with ntl, otherwise they wouldn't be able to do it. ntl have a habit of shooting themselves in the foot quite often but they're not that stupid to blatently breach contracts!

I wouldnt call them free, i would call it keeping up with the opposition.
How many ntl broadband customers would still be with ntl if they was 300 or 750k.

Back to topic, why should 2meg customers suffer because of the 3meg to 10 meg upgrade, i want my old standard of service back wich rarley went much below 2meg.

Well guys, I have been in similar circs since going for the 2Mb service - until yesterday I never bettered 1.5 Mb , but after this AM's 'server servicing and network balancing' (Cambridge area) , I get :

Thu, 26 Jan 2006 17:55:21 UTC
1st 128K took 531 ms = 246840 Bytes/sec = approx 2054 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 531 ms = 246840 Bytes/sec = approx 2054 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 531 ms = 246840 Bytes/sec = approx 2054 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 532 ms = 246376 Bytes/sec = approx 2050 kbits/sec

Long may it continue - hopefully y'all will see the new speeds too.

consider it a tradeoff, they made 2meg unmetered, allowing people to rape and pillage at will comes with a price. Lets just hope they dont allow it to detoriate to a stupid level.

Am in Leeds, just ran a test:

Thu, 26 Jan 2006 23:31:37 GMT
1st 128K took 547 ms = 239620 Bytes/sec = approx 1994 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 547 ms = 239620 Bytes/sec = approx 1994 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 547 ms = 23[/font]9620 Bytes/sec = approx 1994 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 546 ms = 240059 Bytes/sec = approx 1997 kbits/sec
However, it's half eleven so probably not a very good example. Until recently I always got at least 1.9Mbps, but in the past few weeks I've noticed it drop to as low as 1.4Mbps on various occasions.

The logical answer is that by introducing 10Mbps tiers, NTL have over-stretched their infrastructure. Perhaps that's an incorrect conclusion, but I still think 10Mbps connections don't make any sense with the type of upstream included, especially when many users aren't receiving anywhere near the stated maximum connection speed, never mind the fact that getting 10Mbps from anywhere other than highly-multi-sourced peer-to-peer protocols such as BitTorrent is most certainly not an easy task.

I've been getting these figures since changing from usb to ethernet last October

4th 128K took 531 ms = 246840 Bytes/sec = approx 2054 kbits/sec

Very little difference at various times of the day.
Been with NTL since god knows when!! :D

Would you like the old 1GB/day cap back as well? ;)

You and everyone else have never been guaranteed a particular speed sadly.

Ahh well, it looks like i'll have to suffer in silence, at least its reliable :disturbd:
