hello, im new here and also new to telewest, ive signed up for 12 month contract for 2meg broadband internet, b4 i was using 56k dial up connection with aol isp, and to be honest i think ive made a huge mistake in my choice to go with telewest blueyonder, basically i got it for internet online gaming and general web browsing and email. etc etc.. but i can hardly browse at all, its taking me 10mins to load this page :( google takes 6mins to load (ive timed it) fastest ive loaded my home page (google) has been just over 4 mins. with that, gaming is completly out the question. ive done speed tests and here is screenshot -->
http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/2015/nothappy5mz.th.jpg (http://img13.imageshack.us/my.php?image=nothappy5mz.jpg)
as you can see in the picture my upload speeds are an absulute joke?? is this standard for 2meg blueyonder to achive ridiculous upload speeds?? god i hope and pray its not cus im stuck with this for 12 months.. please someone tell me how to have normal upload speeds? im happy with download speeds but with these upload so slow its impossible to use and my old dial up connection was a lot lot faster   i should be getting at absulute least 512kbps upload on a 2meg connection.. so wat is going on?? any help / replys would be greatly apprieciated.. thanx

The upload on TW BB is not 512k, it's 256k.

http://www.telewest.co.uk/websales/product.do?id=3246

They do however, have a 30 day money back guarantee (unlike ntl)

Have you actually reported this issue to TW Tech Support?

:welcome: to the site too. :)

You are confusing kilobits with kilobytes: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/cmtips/speed.html#kilobytes

The 256Kbps up that you should be getting equates to approx 30 kilobits up ( that image shows you are getting 47 up (not really possible), but I'd suggest that your upload is ok.

What?? you suggest my upload is ok? the photo shows what it shows. 47kbps (5.9 KB/sec im not getting nothing confused m8? you must be. this figure (as you suggest i should get 256kbps?) should be 25.6KB/sec upload the download is fine 229 KB/sec. ok the upload is fine but high downloads are useless with stupid upload speeds, its unusable. Far far from ok

just done another test.

as you can see it seems normal now, if 256kbps is max upload speed for 2meg bb, which im my eyes is rubbish upload speeds compared to digital subscriber line (dsl).. these upload speeds on dsl come with a 512 half 1meg connection.. so is this normal for cable?? and is it normal to have pathetic upload speeds (unusable) at certain times of the day??

who's confusing them Neil :p: :D

Where is that speed test you are running? What kind of speeds do you get if you try uploading to your blueyonder webspace? (assuming you have one)

i have run many speedtests and the speakeasy one is most accurate for upload speeds, i started doing speed tests when my internet became unusable (due to silly upload speeds normal according to neil.lol.) genral browsing and sending emails came impossible, sending any kind of attachment was out of the question completly, being a power user i know 100% its not virus / spy/malware causing the problem, so it must be the connection, but it seems now its at certain times of day, ive had TW for 3 days now and is not unusable all the time. i dont have a blueyonder webspace, i dont have nothing to do with blueyonder, dont use there email or nothing, there cd went straight in the bin, all i need from them is Internet connection, which so far are not giving me at certain times, which im affraid is just not good enuf for my line of work. as neil said i have 30 days so i will see how it goes next few days..

1) Ping tests please.
2) UK based speedtest please: http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp
3) Regarding being 100% virus, etc, free, famous last words, we all make mistakes, but if you're running netmeter or similar you'll know what the score is.
4) Worse at 'peak' times, IE 6pm -> 11pm, and ok in the middle of the night?

Asymettry is irrelevant, 2Mbit ADSL has the same 256kbps upload speed as 512k ADSL.

Speakeasy will not be the most accurate test due to the distance between you and other servers, a UK based one will be the best measurement of performance on the Telewest network.

Sounds very much like another famous Telewest oversubscription of the upstream bandwidth, thank their obsession with remaining uncapped without restriction at all even if users are hammering lines to the point where it's compromising service in their area.

just as i thought.. cheers

like i said, speakeasy is most accurate for me, i yet to find a uk based speed test which actually works,(and yes b4 u ask, i do have latest java and macrmedia installed.as most speed tests require) including the link you posted.. and netmeter been saying the exact same thing as speakeasy the whole time (how i know its most accurate) but like you said yourself, oversubscribtion everyone caning the bandwidth. they just cant handle it. oh well. bulldog it is then.. anyone know nething on bulldog dsl??

edit: i will do tests throughout tomorow and see what happens, and make notes of times ect.. today it went tits up at around 4.30 5pm untill 8ish was ok again, so well see. thanx for all your help tho guys;) good forum

MartY3 (http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/member.php?u=15567) I live in bristol too and suffer from similar probs to you and know others here with the same problem.

I recommend you do Dan Elwells speed test (i think that's it), it measures latency on a number of random servers in teh uk and abroad - latency imo is the main problem we have with BY.

When it's all gone tits up give their technical support a ring and ask to be switched to a different upstream channel. Provided you get to speak to someone who's able to (you may have to speak to a supervisor) they'll switch you to a different one which isn't quite so congested. They will try and make you check for spyware etc first (should be easy to avoid actually doing this) and will want you to give readings from your modem's admin page, which would reveal if you actually have a fault with the modem or line.

Just make sure when you phone them it's working pretty badly as otherwise they'll just say it's fine and the people who actually change your upstream channel would reject the move if they think your current channel isn't too bad.

They employ some real f*** wits so hopefully you'll be lucky and get through to one with a clue, otherwise just ask for a supervisor - they're pretty clued up.

Have you made sure that you have removed dial-up tweaks and optimised for cable broadband?

Have a look at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/cmtips/broadjump.html and http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/cmtips/tweaks.html

yes i have m8, i have brand new packard bell computer (which comes with a load of junk software, ie norton, emailchecker) so i first had to format the pc with 'windows only' to get rid of all the branded software and spyware. and i was running my aol dial up connection on my old laptop. thats not the problem, its definetly the connection. upstream. down is fine all the time.

Those pings suck.

Upstream congestion for the win.

People wonder why Telewest only give 384k on their 10Mbit ;)

If you're lucky there's a less congested upstream channel for you to be moved to. If not you're extremely munted.

Those pings suck.

your telling me :td: my internet crashed completly just now :banghead: cable light on me webstar just blinking, would not connect, so i phoned 150, ran a few tests and reset the modem but no joy, still no signal on the webstar test page. so a tecnition was arranged to come out tomorow between 2-4. i just kept on resetting the starting frequency from 0 to 331000000. and on about the 5th try, it connected;) and a lit cable light appeared.and not blinking
