When the Ethernet cable is connected and both the PC and Cable Modem are turned on, is the ENET light on/flashing/off on the front of the modem?

Dead Or Alive

Theres a Orange light at the back of my computer which lights up when ever I connect it to the NTL Modem! The ENET light at the from just stays there. Lol

Just 1 big yellow light.

OK good - that means that the physical connection is there.

What happens on-screen when you plug the cable in? You should get a little bubble pop up saying 'Local Area Connection is now connected' or similar.

Nope nothing like that. Just my desktop and I'm using my son's new computer for this. So, It should work.

Do you happen to know if you bought "patch" or "crossover" ethernet cable ?

It should say on the cable itself in small writing (or on the pack it came in).

You will need the "patch" type, as crossover is for direct PC-PC connections.

isnt it pc to pc/pc to cm a cross over

and

pc to router a patch or is it the other way round

Dead Or Alive

It says on the cable:

type cm 75oC ( ul ) e188630 csa ll81295 ft4
ETL VERIFIED CAT.5 UTP EVERNWQ

Did that there CMD thing nothing came up but a black screen and nothing else ...!!

With the ntl 200 and 250 modems (and possibly the 120), the Ethernet port is Autosensing, so it doesn't matter if you're using a crossover or patch cable.

Jack, try going into Control Panel and clicking Network Connections (or Network & Internet Connections, then Network Connections at the bottom of the next screen). What have you got in there?

All there is, is my USB connection for NTL Modem!

That means the drivers for your Ethernet card aren't installed properly.

Try going to Windows Update (use the Custom option) and see if it shows an update for your Ethernet card drivers.

DoA - which model CM do you use?
This should only be a problem if the CM is a model 100 as after that they autodetect xover and well work i guess.

Have you turned everything off and on again?

Off the PC, Off the CM, connect by ethernet only, remove the USB from both devices, restart the CM and wait until the sync light is steady. Turn on the PC. Does that fix things?

Otherwise the next step...

Start > Control Panel > System
Choose the Hardware Tab
Choose the Device Manager Button
Click on the + next to Network Adaptors
Double Click on the Network Adaptor (there should be one there)
It hopefully says this device is working properly.

Thanks! I got it working. I went into that ther Device Manger and this thing poped up saying Ethernet Controller! I slipped in my NTL disc! And, It installed it! lol! Now, It's kinda fast (It's basically the same as USB!) But never mind. Thanks anyways!

Jack.

If you have a fairly powerful computer then just surfing etc does not use much of it's performance, like driving a modern car at 30 mph, so the USB resource is not noticeable. If you are doing more on it then this is more noticable. Also the card is what is supposed to be communicating with the internet so it just does it better than USB. You also have a spare USB port.

Now to get the router working?
