View Full Version : Need some advice about work.
Im a first aider at ASDA. I took this on about 5 months ago and im beginning to regret it. The reason being I do not like the responsability of being a first aider. Its too much hassel.
For example, they call a first aider to customer service today. As soon as I hear "this is a colleague announcment" my stomach goes all weird. Anyway, they call a first aider, I go to it and its a boy who has cut his lip. What can I do about that? Nothing, but its the hassel of filling out forms, and then later on in the day they call a first aider again, girl tripped over and hurt her knee, there was nothing there, but its the hassel again.
Also i dont like the idea if something is really up, like someone broken their arm or in extream cases, dieing!!!
Another example, I mainly go on second call but if im busy I go when im not busy. But its always me that goes, even though there is like 6 of us.
I wouldnt mind "helping out" if there is a major accident and things like that but its just petty things that annoy me.
Here is the prob. I havnt yet been givan my first aid certificate. But I want to quit it at ASDA, which means I am still a first aider but not at asda. How the heck do I say i dont want to do it anymore but I want my certificate thanks. lol.
get your certificate first and then quit? :erm:
but even thought u may have done it through them, they should still give u your cert

.I'm confused, why are you a first-aider if you arn't confident about it?
Have you had training? If you have had training you should be confident in your knowledge and if you you haven't then you shouldn't be a first aider.
....btw....are you in the Bexleyheath Asda?

i don't think the point was not being confident in what was being done, rather it was that the other first aiders can't be arsed to help out.....and the thread starter always has to help out :erm:

well if that is the case then the manager wants a kick up the arse for not being on top of the situation i reckon

  having worked in a supermarket i know that a lot of the managers are a waste of space (not saying all are)...as long as someone is doing the job they are happy
I'm a first-aider at work and had a weeks intensive training with the St Johns Ambulance to get my certificate. I believe they do refresher training if you feel you need it. Perhaps maybe a chat with HR about your concerns may be of help. If I remember rightly I got my certificate on the day I passed.

the first aiders where i work have refresher training every 2 years , want it or not :)
Yeah I have to do refresher but they do offer support in the meantime if you want it
In the meantime is looking for someone to practice the kiss of life on :naughty:

errr--am I being stupid--or are you in the wrong job?
Hi LooeyB...I have to join the list of the confussed....
You are a `first aider`...for various reasons you do not want to be a `first aider`.Why do you want the certificate????.Like other posters,I got my cert when I passed the exam...same day.A point..can someone clarify ...I am sure I/we were told that we could not attend an accident,at work, without having received the cert....
LooeyB speak to your HR department and ask what happened to your cert. If necessary tell them you like to keep a copy of all documentation relevant to your employment/ training/ education for your own records.
looey
give it time i was the same, and it actually changes as you do it more promise ;)

there is a difference between basic first aid training to get a basic first aid certificate and being a "nominated person to give first aid" or being a licenced first aider (yes i am one)
if they have taken the H.S&E legal requirement 4 day "first aid at work" course and passed they are issued with a licence which lasts for 3 years ,before the 3 years is up they have to take a 2 day refresher course to have their licence renewed for another 3 years....having the certificate is just proof you did the course....its the licence that says you are a qualified first-aider
as for the asda worker...if your hearts not in it why bother doing it in the first place, and not responding to the initial call over the intercom is negligence because the party needing help may not be a child wanting a plaster but may be a cardiac victim e.g that may require cpr and people not responding could be the difference between life and death....all 6 first aiders arriving at once is better than having to call twice for someone who doesnt give a monkeys and therefore shouldnt be doing the job in the first place and if you are first on the scene after the second call all 6 of you need retraining/removing
