How are you connected to ntl broadband? USB or Ethernet?

Has anyone been converted to Ethernet from USB? Or did you convert to USB from Ethernet? :erm: :D

Does anyone here have a wireless setup? If so whats it like on ntl broadband?

Ethernet all day long.

Either direct to the laptop or into a old pc on ethernet and then wireless to the laptop depending on the mood.

[edit] wireless is great if only the pc used as the host was reliable then i would be on it all the time.

When bopdude had his pc then it was great as the connection was constant sometimes upward of 14 days :).

Speed - great get a full connection 1meg if required.
Distance - managed to get 100ft from house and still getting 900kbits.

I was seriously considering getting a wireless setup but I heard the rumours that people can steal bandwidth if they are close enough, how true is this? Thanks for that handyman, just wanted to know what it is was like on ntl bb. :)

If you want you can turn on 128bit wep encription which stops them in their tracks. That said you would have to have someone very close to be able to do this, I tried scanning the local area and found no one with wireless so mines off :)

I've used ethernet to a netgear RP114 firewall/NAT-router/switch since day one.

Started on ethernet now on wireless usb (with a password and 128 bit wep encription!) speeds fine.

Originally on as usb to pc. But then decided we would network our house, about 18 months ago. so now ethernet to router, and ethernet out to the three machines :) Best investment i have ever made!! + it was extremely fun to set up :D

One PC (and sometimes an Apple iBook from work) attached to a router via Ethernet. One Sony Vaio that can attach to the same router either via Ethernet or Wireless.

I do find that with the Sony on wireless, I sometimes have to pull the wireless card out, boot up the sony without the card, then shutdown the sony and re-insert the card to get a connection.

STB-Ethernet-Router-NIC
PCs are weird animals sometimes, some hate the USB connection and some have problems with NICs. Personally prefer NICs as so many broadband users came to forums like this looking for help when the USB connection either wouldn't install or failled them.

SACM > Linksys router> internal network all on ethernet.. Just changed from STB to SACM with not problems.

Edited to add I started off using USB and had speed problems since changing to ethernet no speed problems using 1mb.

+ Laptops running win98 and Linux with netgear MA401 Wireless cards.

All works great (from day 1) :)

have set the wireless up with mac address locking and WEP - try getting in to my wireless you warchalking swines ;)

but seriously - if you have a wireless network set up, unless you lock it to the MAC adresses of your cards or use encryprion, then if someone knows you have it, and wants to use it from nearby (within 20 Meters of your house is the best range I know of - and thats pretty darned good :D ) they can just do so.. (although hiding the SSID can make like a little more interesting for them  )

Im Running

1mb Cable Modem

Ethernet Connection to Windows 2000 Server
Ethernet Connection from Windows 2000 Server to 3com Surestack 24port switch

Then I have a variety of clients connecting I am using WinGate as the Firewall poxy server!!

Great fun setting up and has kept my housemates happy braodband in there room, me happy - share the cost of broadband. and the biggest shared collection of data you could ever want.... are for the love of Domains..

Anyone is more than welcome to freeze their ass off trying to access my wireless also. (no wep, no mac lock)

20m what! On the test I did I got probably 80m and still getting 900kbs on robin walker with 70% signal strength using a netgear usb ad-hoc to a belkin pcmcia card.

I'm impressed (were you just using a straight card, or did you have a "pringles arial" on it....

I suppose 20M on mine is as much as I can get because anything more than 20M away is behind at least one other house.....

Straight out of the box products as shown here (http://marks-stuff.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=23)

Want to do a 'pringles' anttenna experiment as I want to be able to do a shared connection to property 2-4 km away that has neither bt nor ntl adsl access (or even dial-up).

Given the specs of the unit I am going to try it should be possible if i can get line of site :spin:

Cable Modem > Linux Firewall > 10/100 Switch > 10M Hub > This PC.

My cable modem is connected straight to my Linux firewall (ClarkConnect distro of RedHat 9) then to my 10/100 switch downstairs.
That has my webserver, mailserver, ftp server, Laptop and games PC connected and links to the 10M hub upstairs, which in turn has the kids PC and PS/2 connected as well as teh computer in my bedroom (this one).
