Hi,

I'm on 1MB. Family accessing a private ftp server on one of my machines experience 'download' rates of ca. 12KBps.

What are the stated up/down transfer rates for a domestic pipe, and if I went to the next speed up, what would the upload rate from my machine be? Much improved?

[I don't want to host a server as such, just have my family access my digi pics.]

Many thanks.

The 1mbps service can reach up to about 125 KB/s download, and a 10th of this upload. Since anyone else accessing your machine will get your upload speed, 12.5 KB/s is correct.

The 2 & 3 mpbs services will, of course, be two or three times as fast, simple as that. :)

Thank you for this Paul, much appreciated. This upload is ca. 3 time 56k dialup, and is manageable for photo sharing so I can live with that for the time being...

Cheers.:)

At some point (certainly by the end of 2006), ntl will be putting all broadband customers up to 10Mb connections. At that point, we should all be getting proportionately higher upload speeds, too.

Smart - I've been a customer of ntl for 8+ years now and they have recently gone from strength to strength.

dont expect 10% upload on 10meg

dont expect 10% upload on 10megI'm expecting at least 784kbps, but that'll probably be more like 512kbps. :)

I have to say, I am struggling a little on 1Mbps with the 100kbps upstream speed. Oh, if only my exchange was LLUed. :(

its approx 2% of your downstream required on upstream for ack packets ect to allow you to recive full downstream speed that whould be 260k roughly so id expect no more than 512 but i could be wrong about ntls generosity

ntl have not confirmed what the upload will be. I would hope at least 512kbps.

Just had upgrade to 3 meg, and did a speedtest at adslguide, how do these figures look, good, bad, or normal?

downdstream: 2874 Kbps (359.3 KB/sec) actual speed. True speed: 3103 Kbps(inc. overheads)

Upstream: 284 Kbps (35.5 KB/sec. True speed 306 Kbps (inc. overheads)

If you want faster download speeds from your FTP server, why not use your NTL/commercial webspace to store it and give your family?

If you use I-web, it only costs £10 per year, and you could put the photos in a password protected gallery (for free) so if any relatives aren't computer savvy they can save the pictures too. With I-web you can probably (KingPhoenix will tell you for sure) set up extra FTP accounts with different permissions (read only, for example), so you don't have to give out your master FTP login details. Most importantly, the download speeds you get from I-web (or anyone else) will be more than your personal upload allowance.
