Hi.

I wonder if anyone can help.

I need to be able to get an address from a phone number, not sure how to do it with BT.

Have looked at various websites but they all seem to be US related.

Would appreciate any help.

Thanks.

I'm not sure whether it is actually legal to provide such a service. I think you are only allowed to search for a phone number/street address by inputting name and town/postcode (unless you are the police or emergency services).

I believe you can do a 'reverse lookup' via 192.com, but you have to register & pay a fee.

The UKInfo Disc does this to some extent. Obviously if the person is ex-directory then you're stuck...but if not then you might want to have a look at it. I don't know if it's still the case but they used to appear on the front of lots of PC magazines fairly regularly for free 9old versions I presume)

Also, have you tried typing the number (in quote marks) into Google? You'd be amazed how much you can find out - especially if the number is from a business. You'd probably need to format it like this "01xxx xxxxxx" or "01xxx xxx xxx" - don't forget to use the quotes to get rid of any search results that only contain a few of the digits.

Good luck.

Hi.

Thanks for the replies.

it is a business and an 0800 number.

I did try google but not with the quote marks, I will try that.

192.com (who produce Uk InfoDisc) used to do reverse search but stopped about 5 years ago after legal action was taken by BT IIRC.

Shame as it was a very useful service.

I did hear that you can't get reverse info i.e. number to address something to do with the data protection act I think.

Ohhhh, no, no, I am not stalking either..

Better explain the reason I am searching in brief.

This firm did a job for me the other day, and while I was out, there foreman sort of harrassed her and wanted to take her to the bank to get cash instead of an agreement we would pay by check.
I got back just in time to kick the formon off my property saying I would only pay the boss. I found out after, the foreman had to use the phone, saying it was an 0800 number, when I checked the online bill, he had made 1 call to the netherlands and another to a mobile.

Anyway, i informed the police how the guy had verbally abused my wife and and others, and they didn't seem interested.

So i am getting info myself and taking it further. gets complicated. have reported it to Trading Standards and they rang back saying they had referred it back to the police because they say they should have bee more responsive and let us down.

BT won't help you, as others have said.

However, if it's a legit business, then they have to be registered with Companies House, and you have the right to access those details by law.

or if you have the name of the firm, you may well be able to get the details via google.

Hi.

An update if anyone is interested.

Since speaking to Trading Standards had 2 phone calls from the police, last one from the fraud squad, they are coming shortly and are very interested and not impressed what the 2 police in the car told me to do. They are really interested in the 2 phone calls the guy made and asked me to have em printed out ready. They are going to fill me in on more details tonight.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help.
