Im looking into hosting my own phpbb or invision power board on my computer.

Could someone suggest what I need to run these? I understand I need a MySQL database. How would that work on my PC?

Cheers

Hi,

Looey, best thing I can suggest is to contact king pheonix. He owns a hosting co. and does a 99p/month package for nthw members that includes a mysql database 100meg of space and a gig bandwidth. Also there is in the control panel a auto-config that installs invision and sets it all up.

Theres a link in my sig to the one I set up last weekend if you want a look.

Are you using a windows machine?

If so can i suggest you download phpdev, from www.firepages.com.au this is a bundled package which includes everything you will need to transform your pc into a webserver. Basically it works straight out of the box, i have set it up and its all i could ever want. (It even includes a version of invision board on it!!)

Ill have to agree with handyman here im afraid. Have a quick look Here (http://www.i-websolutions.co.uk/nthwwhosting.html) The 99p package is bar far the best deal of that level and the cheapest. You could get a free host but will have pop ups and ads. To host from you pc you will need to set up a web server, php, my sql which is a pain in the a**! I recently tried my self but gave up after weeks of trying. With web solutions you get an item called fantasico which installs phpbb2 and other options as shown below.

For the sake of 99p a month id go to them.

lol, when your on broadband (1meg) you get used to doing large pix, sometimes you forget about the little people (dial-up).

I tend to use .png files to save though.

I'm on a 1 meg connection, but I still think people should perhaps engage their brain and think about the bandwidth transfer for this site, after all, ntl isn't funding this one.

the pic in question is from http://homepage.ntlworld.com/daran.t/pic.bmp
that means the bandwidth is on ntl for the pic, if the pic had been uploaded to the site then that would be a different issue. :)
