Last night i was downloading a 2.6 gig file onto my pc - i have a 3 meg connection, the speed i was getting at the beginning was the ususal 350 kb/s all of a sudden the connection jumped up beyond 2,100 kb/s then levelled off at 1,600 kb/s for a about 10 mins or so the fluctuated again up and down. Needless to say i got my file in half the time. Just wondering if this is NTL fiddling with the 10 mbit upgrade or wasit a freak speed i was getting - i took a screenshot of the speed to sutisfy doubters which i will post when i get home from work

What geographical area are you?

There are several Scottish locations already on it.

Download Failed (1) BTW.

What, ntl customers in Scotland already on the 10Mbps service, are you sure?

Ah, you're right there.. it was Telewest not NTL customers.

....whilst initial d/l calcualtions may not be completely accurate, thus giving a false reading, it would appear that if you sustained that speed for minutes it would be fairly accurate. I'm surprised it peaked at 2100 and settled at 1600 as this would put it into 15Mb territory! On a very small file I would say that the calculation was not that accurate but as it's a sizable file, it certainly seems like you have a much quicker connection than the 3Mb one.

I too have had some spikes that would suggest there is some movement by ntl "trialing" the service - nothing like you have had though, only up to 460Kbps which is about 100 up on my normal speed.

I can guarantee you that the 10Mb upgrades have not started yet for ntl customers. What you may have seen is your uBR having something of a brainfart - it happens from time-to-time! :)

i thought as much - why wont it give me a continual brainfart - that would be nice.

Btw thanks for your replies

Iâ₠¬ÃƒÆ’¢â€žÂ¢m only on the 1mb connection but the same area on the south side, Simshill.

My connection both Modem and cable TV has been on and off this week:rolleyes: , I donââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢t know why. A few night I came in to send a few picââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s to a mate and the lights were doing that Disco thing when they would all come on flash in a row go out settle then go off. So I could not get on even when I switched it off to try and clear it.

So god knows whatâ₠¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s going on.
