I have a Terayon modem which, it seems, does not provide the facility to log into it to check signal levels etc. Is there another way to check signal levels to the modem?

I'm having problems with heavy usage (downloading large files) and trying browse at the same time, the web browser keeps timing out and the download pauses for upto a minute, the the cable light goes of and the modem resets and then every thing starts again :erm:

There isn't an easy way since ntl disabled snmp on the ubr's (security risk). I have done it with my Terayon using Robin Walkers Docsdiag program and manually assigning a secondary IP address in the right range using XP pro.

detailed instructions here - but I have to admit last time I tried it didn't work - possibly coz ntl had blocked the modem and it was in a huff - I used a variant of method 3 here and documented on this forum somewhere (I think!)

By the way I agree with your concern over signal levels I think it most likely you have a problem (upstream) - it may be worth getting an invite from a helpful tech on this site to pm them your modem mac address - ntl can read the diagnostics from their end and can also report the signal properties on their end.

it does still work:

In XP pro I have given myself a second IP address of 192.168.100.2 mask 255.255.255.0, pull the ethernet cable out of my router, plug it into the modem (without rebooting anything) then run docsdiag, save the results, swap ethernet cables back and post here.

The above seems very good - I've never seen the upstream so low!

Thanks mmm. I'll give this ago but it will just be out of interest now. It's got to the point where I can get it to fail at will, so I called NTL, got it to fail while I was on the phone to them and they are sending an engineer to investigate.
