I run XP home and am the administrator. I had NTL Freedom foisted on me and, for the life of me, can't set it up so my other users can dial up. Any suggestions/advice please?

Assuming you are referring to problems with the Freedom dialler, the general concensus on other forums seems to be to uninstall the dialler and return to using DUN (or whatever XP calls it).
I set up a new connection in XP just yesterday for a friend (the first time I had used XP), and IIRC one of the options was to do with different users having access to the dialler (it may have been about all using the same username and password).
I think I went thru Control Panel(classicview)-Network?-Make a new connection(modem).
Perhaps you know all this already and require more of a networking solution, in which case, over to someone else!

I contacted NTL on 0870 445 0137 (not sure if it's 50p per min or not) - was advised to set up each user as an administrator!! I pointed out that this wasn't the way XP was intended to be used and there were security issues in running as an administrator rather than as a user - couldn't give me an answer. Then I queried why 1470 0808 990 9877 wouldn't connect and he told me to connect straight to main phone outlet, NOT through the NTL box - voila! all sorted and everyone can now play. Why couldn't NTL cover this when they notified me about the 'upgrade'? All in all another poor effort by NTL. Thanks dieselglider, I can now set up other connections as well, provided I don't go through the NTL box.

That must be annoying.
Well done NTL.

Just a little tip, but apparently you can use the 0808# thru the box if you prefix it with 121. ie-1210808... or maybe 121,0808...This re-routes the call back thru BT, whereas with the 08005190600# you have to prefix with 1263 to route thru NTL if not using the box. You should only need to use 1470 if you have your own number normally hidden when making calls.

one more thing about that setting up the dialer maunally

do you have to uninstall the Rydial software aswell, or just set up another dialler and set it as the default one - does it interfere with stuff simply by being present on the machine?

ntl freedom 56k access is only useable on 0800 5190600 no prefix req'd in DUN if you have CPS or a dialer if the modem is not going through a dialer on that socket then prefix it with the 1263 ie 126308005190600 you cannot use 121 0808 or anything else BT do not transit traffic to 0800 5190600 across there network also I wouldent bother with the dialler just set it up in DUN as the default.
Furthermore you do not need to insert 1470 either if your cli is barred as the ntl network will still see it from BT all the time its just not displaying it.

HTH :)

Your post is a little confusing to read. The odd comma or full stop really helps when someone is trying to dechyper instructions. :)

On your first point, "ntl freedom 56k access is only useable on 0800 5190600", and then, "you cannot use 121 0808 or anything else", is simply not accurate and doesn't help people using these forums looking for help. Both the 0800 and 0808 numbers are used, but depending on location, only one of them can be used. Obviously you can use the 0800#, whereas I am only able to use the 0808#.

Regarding the 121 prefix I mentioned in the previous posting, I believe that using 1280 may have the same effect.

Also, I don't have your knowledge regarding using 1470, but plenty of users on other forums have to use it.

Again you cannot pefix ntl freedom internet calls with 1280 for cps or 121 for a smart dialer to go over BT, BT will not transit the traffic for this try and see my friend :) NU tone NNR message ?

Again, I question where you get your info from. I have just tried the 121 prefix via the ntl 'hardware' prefix dialler, and am now connected with the 1280 prefix !!

The 121 prefix also works for others thru the prefix dialler....can you explain that? I see no reason why it shouldn't work thru cps either, although as I don't have it enabled, I can't say for sure.

Actually, now I think about, in the letter I got from ntl recently about having my line cps enabled, they quite clearly state that 1280 is the the prefix to use to route the call thru BT...

Ok, l'm not trying to fall out over this, obviously you are telling things from your own perspective which is fair enough, as I also have had problems (along with most dial-up customers) connecting to ntl. But try to understand that a problem relating to you isn't the same for everyone else, and ntl seem to be trying to confuse things further recently with their changes to dialing up.

I'm only speaking from my own experience, and relating that to others in various forums, not just this one. :smokin:

ok I may be missing something here but,

1. Can you always connect under the administrator log in ?

If so then it's not the connection problem.

When you are in Network connections and click on the ntl connection if it was a ' normal ' connection you would be able to view the properties and also choose to let all users share this connection.

However because the freedom dialler is not a ' normal ' connection, the work around seems to be that you would have to have the freedom software installed for each log in you have. They don't all have to be administrator.

This has been the only way around it I have found.

I await some other replies.

Hope this helps. :p

Hi NDT4U, I'd be interested to know what your issues with ntl freedom are, to see if anyone here can advise.

At present, I can only use 08089909877 to connect and browse (when not engaged).

126308005190100 was my original dial-up #, but is now just a re-direct to the freedom dialler download page.

126308005190600 I was able to use for a few weeks when Oct 7th was first announced, but now is constantly engaged (disabled for my area I reckon).

From browsing different forums, people in different regions seem to have use of either the # I use or the 0800...0600 #. Using the 121 or 1280 prefix is only for the 0808 # and appears to work for most people. Some even stated that they didn't have to use the 1263 prefix for the 0800 #, although at a later stage they did have to.

So nothing seems to be the same for everyone.

02893 - Whitehead exchange. You have ways of checking for info? Mind you, in January I intend to go broadband when it's enabled. :)

edit: Strange.....I've just realised my connection at this moment is thru the original 0800.....0100 number. The wife had connected before I got home from work and hadn't said. Browsing fast and stable, and no auto-direct to the download page. The last time this happened was early in the morning about a week ago just when the server was getting back online from the outage, although later that day it went back to the auto-direct.
