I updated the firmware (as requested when I started iTunes yesterday) on my 4th gen Ipod, it uploaded it ok then asked me to plug it into the normal mains adaptor, problem is, I normally charge it using USB from the PC as I left the mains charger in England and I'm now left with an icon on the screen asking me to do it and I can't do anything else as it won't charge from the PC anymore. Any ideas?

You could take it into an Apple Store and see if they can quickly plug it in for you to sort it out.

I normally use http://www.ilounge.com/ for any problems I have with mine but from having a quick scan over it looks like an AC adaptor is needed for completing a firmware update.

An Apple store? Round here? It'd be slightly less hassle to fly to England and pick up the power adaptor, so not really a solution :(

If its just an adaptor you need, can't you go to Dixon's or whatever and plug your iPod into a display model's adaptor? Or does it need to be plugged into a computer at the same time? If you had a laptop, i'd take it down there and appeal to the salesmen's human nature. They'd probably let you.

The plug for the AC is some stupid Apple proprietry design isn't it? You can't just go down to Argos and get a 4 quid multiadaptor?

The USB cable plugs into the plug and then charges. If I understand correctly the problem is you do not HAVE that plug? Your only choices are 1) Buy a new one 2) Get the old one sent if a friend has access to it 3) Go around a mates who has a iPod and do it there.

I think you will be able to charge from your laptop but they want a mains connection for formatting/updating

It's Apple proprietry rubbish :( Locally the only shop that has any Ipods in stock is Argos and they don't have display models. I've seen a charger for 7 quid so I might just order that instead. Stupid Apple!

What kind of charge have you seen? You need a power source from the mains for updating the ipod/etc etc

Yes, but with an UK plug on. Basically I used the latest Apple update tool, it said it was updating the firmware then told me I needed to unplug it from the PC and plug it into the mains adapter. Since I left the mains adapter (with firewire cable attached) in England I've been happily charging via USB with no bother ... until now, now it comes up with a mains adapter icon and the PC doesn't recognise the Ipod.

I guess it will start charging again once you connected to the mains. What it the other charger you have seen? You can charge via the mains with USB as well if you got a USB plug

I don't have the plug that goes into the wall socket so I can't plug a USB cable into it.

This is what I've seen, presumably it'll do the job?

Like he said, it's not a fault, and there is no Apple store even remotely near me.

But if you pull the 2 pin off it here

you will find a standard 8 socket (like you get on HP printers, old tape players/portable boom boxes).
But it sounds like your charger is not in sight.
