I have heard good things about portable DAB radio's! Such as... http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0001ZN7J0/026-8673500-0556461 Not sure if it's what you are looking for tho.

You stated in the first post that you wanted it to be able to pull FM and AM yet you go on to talk about DAB radios???

im confused...

How very confusing. I've never heard them called 'powerful' before!

You want a selective/sensitive radio. One of the main things to look for are the filter specs - a lot of cheap radios have 400 or 300kHz filters. You really want either 180kHz or even 150kHz filters, e.g. the same as in most car radios.

No doubt, most shops selling even quality radios may not be able to tell you about this. Have a look at www.nevadaradio.co.uk, they've always been spot on with me.

As for DAB, that's a whole different ball game. Without being too technical about it, you really want either a Pure model at home or a Philips DA1000 or Elansat if you're on the move. :) Of course, DAB is far more pricey and not necessarily any better for what you need - all it offers is more choice, the sound quality is no better than FM!

James, who spends far too much of his time writing about these things and attempting to understand the concepts behind it! :disturbd:

(Oh, and if you want more advice from people who know what they're on about - more than me! - try www.ukonair.com :))

DAB is bloody great!! For a start Capital Gold that's normally on mushy MW is crystal clear stereo! There's the info too ie what song is playing. Sound quality is super duper!!

The other points all stand, but the sound quality certainly isn't "super duper". DAB for music stations was designed to run at a minimum of 192kbps - all stations, bar Radio 3 sometimes, run at 128kbps. It's acceptable, but slightly annoying if you have a well-tuned ear. :)
