Hi

I wonder if any of you could please help me. Had NTL Broadband for a couple of years now. Last week my 2 meg broadband started becoming slow. Running tests on pc pitstop showed me my speed has halfved tp 1 meg. After hours onto NTL an engineer came out and changed my samsung box. Still the same problem is occuring. I have used ewido, adaware etc - there is no spyware or virus`s on my system. NTL are saying its my computers fault, that when i go to RUN - CMD - NETSTAT -ANO i have too many connections open. This is not possible. I have no shareware etc. below is a copy and paste of netstat -ano

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]

according to NTL this is my problem. ive tried deleting the unneeded connections via task manager using pid numbers but 4 and 1040 cant be shut down, ones system etc. when i turn my laptop on there is alot more connections like msn messenger but ive shut all these off for the above netstat. what am i to do. ntl say they cant help me either. do i need to take my laptop somewhere to be fixed? its a 3.4 fujitsu 1024 . I also posted this query on another forum - this was one of the replys

Your netstat shows that you have precisely zero connections open. There are zero entries saying ESTABLISHED. An entry saying LISTENING is not an open connection. You should not try to delete any of the entries you show, as they are nearly all essential system components.

I take it you have run adaware, spybot s&d, microsoft anti-spyware and a good anti virus software? Make sure you have up to date definitions as well. Have you ever run a P2P tool at all in the past? Are you running a firewall?
Have you tried booting to safe mode to remove as many external programs which are starting a boot up or running msconfig to see what is actually starting when you first start windows?

Hi There

Thanks for your reply. i use ewido/adaware daily and have norton 2005 on my system. When on the phone to NTL i did a boot in safe mode and still got the same speed. So i confirm no spyware or virus. what can be slowing this connection down? personally i think its ntl`s end and im unwilling to reinstall windows as they have suggested!? NTL are convinced that my NETSTAT -ANO report with all these connetions are the problem.

Thanks

hi, forgot to add, i have confifured msconfig so that only a few programs start at the startup. ZEPH - your report is very reassuring as that looks very similar to my report before ive turned off msn messenger.( are ntl speaking rubbish to me?! ) i have no p2p software on my laptop

They may not be the problem but it may well be that something on your install has gone wrong. It only takes one system file to corrupt or save the wrong setting and you can find all sorts of weird things happening. Personnally I would run a battery of Anti-spyware scans from different tools just to be safe and run a scan from a second AV software just in case something is being missed.
Have you tried a system restore back to a date prior to the sudden slow down?
Can you check the connection against another PC?
Edit: Just seen what you put into your post as I was typing, reset MSConfig as you may have stopped something which is now causing problems. Once everything is reset we'll have a clearer understanding of what is and should be running at start up.

Quite frankly whoever told you you have "too many open connections" should be taken to one side and sacked. That is the biggest load of bull**** I have heard in sometime.

First and most obvious question - have you tried re-booting the Cable Modem ?

again - thanks for all your replies - what a fantastic forum!

im at work at the moment so Paul C i will try reseeting the msconfig as soon as im in ( around 7pm ). Paul - the guy who told me that from my netstat -ano i had too many connections was actually one of the managers!! i had a new box fitted on Friday ( i guess that would reset the modem? ) . if i get no joy later i was going to bring my laptop into work tommorow to see if one of the it guys could put the works internet connection through it to see what speeds im getting?

any other suggestions are greatly appreciated

and to add to this - when he was getting me to shut down these connections the pc kept having to shut down as i was closing vital files! - crazy!

I have tried resetting my msconfig and loading all possible startup programs. It makes no difference to my download speed. This is taken from pc pitsop

Running Programs

Malicious or poorly written running programs are a common cause of poor performance and system instability. We strongly recommend that you use an antivirus program such as EZ Antivirus from Computer Associates (http://www.pcpitstop.com/offsite.asp?{ezantivirus|winspecs}) and a spyware scanner such as PestPatrol (http://www.pcpitstop.com/offsite.asp?{pestpatrol|winspecs}) on a regular basis. To get control over your running programs we suggest WinTasks 5 Pro (http://www.pcpitstop.com/offsite.asp?{wintaskpro|winspecs}). Click on a file name to see more information about it.

:) HI!

Major development. I was browsing through the internet and i found this:

In some situations, your connection issues can be resolved by temporarily configuring your web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer) to use a specific proxy server. See How do I specify a proxy server? (http://www.chetnet.co.uk/articles/index.php?page=index_v2&id=32&c=5)

Configuring Internet Explorer To Use A Specific Proxy Server

The following procedure works on all versions of Microsoft Windows running Internet Explorer 5.x/6.x. The procedure for Internet Explorer 4.x is very similar.

Chetnet also has an animated demo on how to configure a proxy server in Internet Explorer (http://www.chetnet.co.uk/demos/proxy.htm) available.

Open Internet Explorer and go to Tools > Internet Options...

In the new window that opens, select the Connections tab. Now click on LAN Settings....

In the new window that opens, ensure Automatically detect settings and Use automatic configuration script are both not ticked. Also ensure that Use a proxy server for your LAN is ticked. Now click Advanced...

In the new window that opens, enter the name of your chosen proxy server (see proxy server list (http://www.chetnet.co.uk/articles/index.php?page=index_v2&id=32&c=5#list) below) in the HTTP field. The port should be set to 8080. All other rows should be left blank. You should ensure that Use the same proxy server for all protocols is not ticked. Finally, in the box labelled Do not use a proxy server for addresses beginning with: type 192.168.*

Click OK to close the Proxy Settings window and again to close the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings window. Now click OK to apply the changes and close Internet Options.

The last few stages in ensure that the proxy server isn't used for Secure HTTP and FTP traffic. It also ensures that you retain access to any cable modem diagnostics pages and to any router setup pages, which typically use addresses in the 192.168.x.x range.

So Ive done this and applied one of the Bromley ( where i live ) address`s. Guess what? my broadband speed is up to this!

Download Bandwidth Test Results

Download speed: 1863 kilobits per second

Test details: 1204 kilobytes downloaded in 5.172 seconds.
Receive buffer size: default size

So i appear to have fixed my problem but dont know quite what it all means?? was i set on the wrong server? i am ok to keep it to this setting now? and were NTL talking ****e the whole time? i want to phone them to go over how ive fixed it but dont know really how to explain it!

Thanks for any advice:)

That is a speed test on the internal ntl network, which shows your connection is working at 2M

These are my results :

Sun, 2 Oct 2005 20:40:44 UTC
1st 128K took 531 ms = 246840 Bytes/sec = approx 2054 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 531 ms = 246840 Bytes/sec = approx 2054 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 532 ms = 246376 Bytes/sec = approx 2050 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 547 ms = 239620 Bytes/sec = approx 1994 kbits/sec

Speed tests external to ntl will not be so accurate as they are affected by external network bottlenecks and also the ntl proxy servers response. Changing proxy from the default can, as you see, improve the apparent result.

Hi Paul

Since changing to the proxy server everything is going so much quicker. Bizarly enough the ntl home page always takes longer to load when at 2meg then 1! thats how i initally knew it was working ok again. So changing the proxy server has improved my speed - dramatically. Do i need to phone ntl or anything or is it ok to keep it the way it is now?

No need to ring ntl. Stay as you are - and try changing back after a few days.
