Don't NTL have to enable these modems to work anyway?

Yeah they wont work.
Its actually illegal to sell the modem because it actually doesnt belong to you in the first place and is the property of NTL.

These then get chipped and appear on ntl's network anyways whether ntl enable them or not.

I am sure NTL will spot them once they go online.

I wonder if I could sell my Cable modem a Teryon TJxx

bought time from them rather than pay the monthly rental (Which the bugger now charge)

NTL don't collect modems after cancellations. I have one somewhere upstairs. I would think that if they don't want it back, it's up to me to decide to a: bin it, b: use it as a doorstop, c: flog it on ebay, d. whatever

I forget how long it is now, it could be one of those unspecific time periods covered in British law by the word "reasonable" - but if ntl are given the opportunity to collect their property after the service has been cancelled, and they neglect to do so, then the title of ownership passes to the bearer of the goods.

If that person wants to sell them, they can - quite legally.

They actually told me they didn't want it back. When I cancelled, they arranged a date for collection of the STB. I said: don't you want the cable modem as well? The response was: we don't collect them anymore. I'd think the modem is my property from that moment...

got this reply from some one selling a terrayon:

Im just selling the unit as its surplus to reqirements, its upto the buyer what they do with it, im just saying that NTL use similar models. perhaps someone might want a spare or rig something up to a network of units. Im sure the bidder will know what they want it for, whuch quite frankly is none of my busniess.

I think I'd probably agree with you. Of course if ntl suddenly decided they want it back, proving that you'd had that conversation with them could be tricky unless you had something in writing.

Always best to conver ones behind!

I believe there is a way for them to be rigged to work, if NTL made a point of takeing them back it would make this type of fraud so much harder to do

That is true if they was collected but I am sure I read that we are supposed to post them back when you join NTL you agree to these terms so you should post it back. Without searching through the T&C again to find the correct part I cannot prove this unless someone working for NTL can point us in the right direction.

I think you are right Florence but no body chases it up when they are not returned

(ii) you may arrange for ntl to collect the Equipment from your premises.

If you do not return the Equipment or allow ntl to collect it we shall be entitled to bill you and you shall be liable to pay for the cost of replacing the Equipment and, unless the termination is due to our breach, you shall continue to be responsible for the payment of Charges until all the Equipment has been returned or its replacement value paid. In addition to all other rights, we reserve the right to bring proceedings against you for the return of our Equipment.

I have done ii, but they only picked up the STB, they weren't interested in the CM

I think it would cost about £5 max to return the modem in its original package, if NTL started to bill all SACM ex customers for £25 for not returning the modem as requested in the T&C there would be none on Ebay now.

I can see why they collect the STB they cost more money but if the SACM was posted back they cant refuse it.

totally agree with you on the modems and cable box's flo but the isolator is somthing that could have been bought elsewhere. I have one that was given to me by the ntl techy.

i will leave it up to some else to check but i belive if its rented equipment then its thier repsonsiblity to colect it even if T & C's say other wise

in fact i think the wording is misleading as the address part should be for those who dont want ntl to call to collect

but once you ask them to do so you can give them a reasonable time mostly accepted as betwen 14 and 21 days to collect or you can dispose of the item as you wish

saying all that it would seem daft they cant either collect or send a post paid bag for them

not sure but wont these also be included in this electronic waste recycling law

Im such a fool :bigcry:
I bought an NTL 250 modem off ebay and havnt managed to get it working (now found out that I carnt). I bought it because the ethernet port on my NTL 200 modem is broken and I am sick of using USB (and couldnt be bothered ringing NTL). If I ring NTL and tell them that the ethernet port is broken, will they send me a new modem?

Gareth

Yeah, provided you are paying for your broadband, then they'll exchange a faulty modem with a working one. It only takes a phone call... and it's a freephone number.

When I left NTL a guy came round to pick up my STB. He didn't want to know about the cable modem though. I threw it out in the end. The customer go to the expense of sending in a modem that NTL obviously don't want back. Your argument would stand up if people only had a modem, but if the stb collectors show no willingness to pick up the modem, why should the customer be bothered to return it?

They don't have to return it, They cost ntl a tenner and it would not be cost effective to refurb and put them back in to use. The problem we all have is the idiots that sell them on ebay and blag people.
