Downloads are fine. Browsing is grinding to a halt. 600 speed running at less than dial up. STB modem. Connections all fine and secure. Rebooted already.

This is the message that I got off my aunt and I thought that some technically minded person may be able to help.

Try changing to a different proxy (or setting one, if you haven't already).
You could also try specifying a DNS server.

I run with a proxy switched on permanently and a Demon DNS (waaaay faster than relying on ntl's own). My browsing is always nice and swift.

Ask if you need to know how to do this...

OK, I don't use IE/windoze myself, but this post from someone who does will tell you how to specify an alternative Domain Name Service server:

http://forum.nthellworld.co.uk/showpost.php?p=66650&postcount=35

The value to add in the 'preferred DNS' field is 158.152.1.43

Try this as an alternative proxy server:

cache1-blfs.server.ntli.net

or alternaatively try:

inktomi2-lee.server.ntl.com

Either way, this post tells you how to do it:

http://forum.nthellworld.co.uk/showpost.php?p=49537&postcount=1

If you want to speed up more than just browsing, the same post has details on the different settings you have to change.

Don't be daunted by any of this ... I learned what I've just posted from guys on this forum, and if I can pick it up anyone can!

Thanks.

I'll print it off and give it to my aunt tomorrow when I see her :)

did they work ok?
lol .. it registered as a comment, but not everyone's rep points add to your total at the moment. I don't know how it works, I think you have to have a certain number before you can influence someone else's reputation.

We've been trying to fathom it in this thread:

More to the point, had the browsing improved?

Just to quickly update the discussion in this thread, I have experienced intermittent connection problems today while still using the DNS server 158.152.1.43 ... you may remember we discussed this a few weeks ago while trying to work our way out of the latest NTL network problems.

After receiving 'unable to find the server www.etc' and 'your computer is not connected to the internet' error messages, I got things back to normal by unsetting the DNS. I don't know whether Demon (who I understand runs this server) is having problems or what, but thought you might all like to know in case anyone else is still using this DNS.

Most of the N/West proxies are turned off, so you do not need to specify one,

Check here to see if you are routed through a proxy.

I have had no problems whatsoever tonight, but someone on .com in Bolton is having problems with one site in particular. it could be a local problem in the Bolton area.

In addition to the Demon DNS, I had NTL's Belfast proxy specified (don't ask, it did the job at the time). I have switched this off for good measure too. Normally my connection goes transparently through an NTL server in Luton, presumably having switched my specified proxy off that is what's now happening. In any case, browsing is fine for me now.
