It's a video codec which can enable you to have a movie file with no apparent loss in quality and a much smaller file size.
It's the mp3 of video.

Roger is right, you can sometimes fit a DVD film on CD with little loss in quality. Unfortunally the compression means the disc connot be read linearly (in a straight line) so it usually needs to be copied to a hard disk.

It's not always that, it's because so much data needs to be processed.
One downside to DivX is the CPU usage, you really need to have at least an Athlon or P4 to get the best performance and quality, otherwise you might notice stutters.
I recently went from an oveclocked Duron 1.1 to an Athlon XP and all the films I thought were just bad copies actually played properly. :)

not just that though. My dad pc had problems playing divx from a dell gxa. p233 with 96MB ram. It kept stopping and starting (windows 9x) I put windows 2000 on the machine and they played gr8 so its also virtual memory you need plenty of and windows ntx handles this allot better than win9x

Win98 is really too old for a modern computer these days.
Win2000 is (imo) the minimum spec for a network/workstation computer and XP for a home PC.

So what spec do you recommend for ntl's mail servers then? ;)

I prefer win2k myself. It doe's everything windows xp can do but doesn't need as much resource's.

They're supposedly linux/sendmail based machines...great for a company that neither supports nor endorses linux :)

Back on topic, DivX is behind the times, try XviD :D
