View Full Version : Slow after adding (and removing) firewall router
Since adding a Netgear FR114W between the PC and the cable modem (and with only one PC using the internet) my 150 kbit/sec b/w has dropped to less than half, usually 60 kbits/sec but sometimes as low as 35 kbits/sec.
The supprise was that after removing the FR114W the speed didn't improved. Downloaded .zip files are also now corrupt.
What did I do wrong ? Any suggestions appreciated.

Was the slowdown immediately after adding the router ?
With the removal, and the problem still being there, I would suspect that it isn't you, although it is strange about the zips !!

Didn't have cause to do a speed test before, but immediately noticed the dial up type speeds after.

1st 128K took 17080 ms = 7674 Bytes/sec = approx 64 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 23890 ms = 5486 Bytes/sec = approx 46 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 19830 ms = 6610 Bytes/sec = approx 55 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 21640 ms = 6057 Bytes/sec = approx 50 kbits/sec :(
What happens when you go back to using the PC directly connected to the net?

The above figures are with out the FR114W (!) - going to try leaving the modem switched off over night.

Is it possible that the MTU value was changed during the router installation?

Nice thought, but the test at http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks says MSS requested=1460 (default ?)
It recommended an RWIN of 7300 which I set with Dr TCP, but still getting between 57 kbits/sec and 65 kbits/sec. Also tried a fresh install of win98se with all its default settings and got the same results :(
Trying another NIC next . .
