How things have changed since I was a lad...

My nephew is in the second year of high school, (year 8 in the new fangled way) and the homework that his school is setting is abysmal.

Last year he was lucky (or unlucky, depending on your point of view) if he got one piece of homework a week and that was usually just finishing off work from classtime. One homework was just to bring a takeaway menu into school for art!!!

My sister and nephew were over my place today and he actually had some maths homework to do.

Back in my day, we were shown how to do something in class, then we were given homework from that. Not anymore.

He's been told to do it and if he did not know what to do, leave it till next week and ask the teacher.

It's relying on there being a parent who knows what to do. Not everyone got top marks or were good at every subject or the simple fact that it may have been a while since they were at school, so they may not be able to help. It's like home learning.

The annoying thing is that the primary school that he went to, set proper, regular homework, to get him used to high school. So it's been like a step backwards for him.

Wish it had been like that (no/minimal homework) when I was at school! ;-)

For the first 3 years I was at secondary school we were told to sepnd about 20 to 30 minutes on each piece of homework, you roughly got 3 pieces a night and then for the final two years it was mainly working on your coursework and was asked to spent about 40 to 50 minutes on your bits in question and again that was about 3 pieces of work but most of it was usually coursework.

Most people spent the minimal time on it they can (10 minutes) and you can usually do it then.

Strange, my daughter who is in year 5 gets homework every night and my son gets one lot of homework and spellings each week and he is only in year 2. I should complain to your LEA or OFSTED about the standards or in this case lack of standards.

Don't worry its not like that, I generally get 3+ hours of homework a night :)

Fun, fun fun!!!

Probably a good one, if he gets HW.

Be interesting to see how much the kids on here get per night really.

Schoolwork should be done at school, not at home. Kids should play when they are at home, not be stuck doing 'homework'.

Not true, it's the best time to consolidate what's done in class time.

LOL Wish people thought like that when i was at school!! Jeez i feel hard done to now because I used to get mountains of homework! Though i'm still a firm believer that school was harder when i went!! :p:

I used to get 3 lots of homework per night, about a half hour of each. Then in the 6th form it was less subjects, but more like an hour per subject. Plus we had spare periods during the day to study. The good thing was, I could go home, have dinner, then do homework for a while; it was better to do it after a break, and a rest, and especially something to eat. But 6th form was the pits, for many other reasons. Wish I'd gone to college instead.

I disagree - as has already been said, it's supposed to consolidate what has been done in class.

In addition, it gives the kids some responsibility - teaches them to plan their work and ensure it is done.

Im not to bothered about homework, its just when its not worthwhile - i have been sitting here for an hour crunching algebra equations - all exactly the same, just with different numbers. It is when worthless tasks like that are set when I despair at the concept of HW.

Matthew

When coursework time comes around too much time can be spent on it at home due to other teachers not caring about what other coursework you had to do and they feeling that their work is far more important than another other's. Just a word of warning keep an eye on how much they are been set and if you think its far too much complain. That's what I did when some of us where spending 6+ hours a night when we didn't need to.

Also some teachers use it against the pupils, they dont bother setting the work in lesson because they cannot be bothered so they give it as homework when it really isnt needed if you get what I mean.

Algebra is the most pointless useless waste of time ever! I absolutely hated it!! And the day I finished with Algebra at school i never used it again!!

I didn't get set homework in primary school - I would agree with Paul M that kids of that age need to be kids.

But secondary school for me was a boarding Grammar school - homework was compulsory, and amounted to over 3 hours a night. ;)

But it doesn't! The only thing it promotes is people wondering what the hell use it is. :p::p::p:

I use algebra a lot, in fact I am glad i was taught 'traditional' maths, including trigonometry and calculus

- vectors, venn diagrams & matrices, I have never used :D

Likewise. I enjoyed maths, up to calculus... which seemed the biggest waste of time ever. Algebra still has it's uses even now though.

Honestly! Anyone with half an ounce (or whatever it is kilos) of common sense would guess that will only take a fraction of your time!

Agree with you makikomi, my youngest, aged 11, just started new high school, and gets homework every night.
House rules means he does this whilst I make evening meal (single parent), no tv, games etc. If he gets stuck on any subject, he knows I'll help, but I'll not do it for him.

I agree with Paul.

These days we seem to think that the more time kids spend doing schoolwork, the better it is. So, so, so, so wrong wrong wrong.

They ALSO need to be allowed time to socialise and develop social skills. Kids who are not allowed for weeks on end because of homework pressures will suffer so very badly in later life when they cannot form or develop relationships properly because all they've ever done is worked like a damn robot.

90 minutes per night is the MAXIMUM any teenager should be made to do. But to be perfectly honest I am against homework full stop. Let them have a life outside of school. They'll get little enough time when they grow up.

I don't know about you but when it came to developing social skills i did that when i was at school more! The people i met up with at night were the friends i had already made at school! Having me doing homework didn't make any difference on that front!! The people who don't develop social skills are the kids that are mothered and protected by there family's from the outside world!

An hour or two is ample i agree! Studying for a better education should be encouraged though! I was encouraged to study but my mum and dad never forced me to get homework done!

Unless you are a Mathematician or a Physicist what useful purpose do they serve?

I have never come across a use for matricese but at least I enjoyed doing them (can't remember now though):D
