This number keeps calling me and when I answer the phone goes dead
If I call it back, it's a dead number
Can I do anything about it! - It's happened about 6 times this evening already

EDIT : I suspect it's NEXT Directory!?

Sounds like a 'silent call' http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/breakfast/4157612.stm

Typically these are from a call centre. They dial ahead of an operator being available, and the system then tries to connect an operator with a dialled call. (These guys must get very tired, answering calls without even taking a breath!)
Anyway, if, when you pick up, there is no operator available, the system just hangs up.

The number usually doesn't allow incoming calls.

The number you've shown is too short for an actual telephone number (in the UK, anyway) - check using 1471 and let us know the full number.

EDIT : I suspect it's NEXT Directory!?

Did you mean Ex-directory? That has nothing to do with whether you can call the number or not. Just whether it appears in a directory or not.

Err, that's *American* films, because there's no 555 area code in the USA!

AFAIK there are no numbers starting 05 in the UK either.

AFAIK there are no numbers starting 05 in the UK either.

When Mercury Communications were operating they used 0500 as their version of 0800 but I presume that got changed when the numbering system was reviewed.

According to this article in Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone_numbering_plan#United_Kingdom) numbers starting 05 are "05 Reserved for corporate numbering and VoIP services."

could well be a voip form of line, if i remember correctly bt's voip broadband scheme (Broadband Voice) was using similar number allocation to this one.

Can I request a specific telephone number or ask for my number to be changed?

Unfortunately, this functionality is currently not available. The Broadband Voice numbers which start with 05 are automatically allocated when you order the service and cannot be changed.

I recommend you call Bulldog customer services on 08004048151 and tell them what you think of their marketing methods.
If you are already registered with the telephone preference service you should also make a complaint about Bulldog. Goto www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/ (http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/)
