hi,

well i just moved to a new house, first priority was Broadband :)
so made my choice 600k NTL package, engineer came installed it and it worked fine.

ive had it all of 5 days and the last 2 its been useless, i know there were major dns outages Tuesday then yesterday it might have been something to do with nottingham going down.

not a happy customer.

my setup:

NTL home 120 modem
Linksys BEFW11s4 (4port + wireless)
Desktop: amd xp3200
768mb pc3200
win2k
8rda+ (using onboard nic)

Now when i open a web page using ie6 the little blue status bar loads instantly then it takes another 5 - 10 seconds to load the page.
Is this normal?

Does it happen on all sites?
Did it happen on your previous connection at all and what sort of connection did you have before (ADSL etc)?

Firstly, Welcome :wavey:

The slowness depends on the site your visiting usually, but that does seem extreme. There are plenty of BB users on here, so I'm sure they will chip in with tests etc.

Hi and welcome to the site.

Does it happen without the router etc connected?

Might be a proxy issue,have a look here http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/cmtips/trancache.html for help in changing it.

Welcome to the brotherhood ... I can see you're going to be right at home here! ;) :wavey:

I discovered during the recent outages that ntl's proxy and DNS servers are not the best, even when they are supposed to be working normally. I get significantly faster browsing by specifying 158.152.1.43 as my DNS server instead (it's a Demon server and waay better than ntl). A number of other foks on this forum are using it too.

it seems to happens with most sites, its even worse on the girlfriends laptop (winme).

ive tried setup with and without the router and there seems to be no difference.

the only other thing i noticed is that when the cable modem is connected to the router it occasionally loses its ip address for no reason.
usually its something like 81.86.68.86, then i have unplug it from the router, give it 5 mins then reboot everything and it gets the same ip address back.

i will try the web cache and dns change after work :)

well it seemed much better last night, pages actually loaded properly and within about 3 seconds :)
played bf1942 for a bit, had a nice ping.
and downloads are at 72kb/s

so until NTL breaks again im almost a happy user.
